OVERVIEW
This is a part-time position working under the direction of the Recreation Director, Recreation Coordinator, or Program Supervisor. Responsible for officiating in one or more of the following sports: baseball, softball, basketball, flag football, soccer, or other sport leagues. Maintain standards of the game; detect infractions of rules and decide penalties according to established regulations; instruct players on reason for violation. Assist with field preparation and control of the overall game. Maintain a high level of professionalism and customer service. Exhibit and emphasize teamwork and sportsmanship. Perform other duties as assigned.
OFFICIAL/REFEREE/UMPIRE ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Ensure guidelines, rules and sportsmanship are enforced.
- Officiate assigned games for leagues and tournament play.
- Assist in field and/or court set-up and take down.
- Conduct safety and related inspections.
- Report any field and/or court problems to Recreation Manager.
- Report any problems with coaches, players, parents or spectators to Program Supervisor.
- Ensure safety of staff, participants and citizens.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Education & Experience: Sufficient education and training to demonstrate an aptitude or ability to perform above related duties; AND Experience performing above or related duties as a seasonal, part-time or volunteer worker; OR An equivalent combination of education and experience.
Knowledge: Strong knowledge of baseball, softball, basketball, flag football, or soccer, including rules, scoring procedures, signals, and mechanics.
Abilities: Ability to maintain control of teams, coaches, and players. Must have the ability to resolve problems and conflicts at game site that may be confrontational and stressful. Ability to work outside in a variety of weather conditions. Ability to move and interact with others in various activities that may include bending, stooping, walking, and lifting.
Must be at least 15 years of age prior to beginning employment. 14 year-olds will be considered on a case by case basis depending on expereiance in the sport.
For WFFL only: Must be able to demonstrate knowledge on the use of chain correctly to mark the field.
