About the Job
As an Azure Platform Administrator, you will join a Cloud Platform and Operations (CPO) team whose goal is to provide well managed platforms to the enterprise. You’ll work with CPO members and IT customers to drive optimization, streamline processes, and fulfill platform level requests. You will be a member of a dynamic technical engineering and operations team of dedicated and passionate innovators.

In your role, you will proactively contribute to solutions that bolster cloud modernization initiatives and help us meet departmental priorities, while providing value-added support and helping evolve the services to match Markel’s current and future needs.
What we are looking for
- 2-4 years hands-on experience administering Azure, along with an understanding of core Azure services, Azure workloads, security, and governance.
- Working knowledge of PowerShell, SQL, Azure CLI, Azure portal, and Azure Resource Manager templates.
- Experience with containerization technologies.
- Experience with platform as a service (PAAS) administration.
- Experience with Azure Kubernetes Service.
- Experience with computer networks, including firewalls, routers, and load balancers.
- Experience with Terraform or other similar orchestration applications.
- Strong experience in deploying, configuring, and managing Azure cloud infrastructure, including virtual machines, storage, and networking.
- Experience with automation and monitoring tools, such as PowerShell, Azure Automation, Azure Application Insights and Azure Monitor.
- Strong knowledge of cloud security protocols and best practices.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex issues.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
- Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or related field.

What you’ll do
- Design, deploy and maintain cloud-based infrastructure, including compute, database, and network resources.
- Manage and monitor the Azure cloud platform, ensuring optimal performance, scalability, and security.
- Design and implement automation and monitoring tools to ensure efficient and effective cloud operation.
- Develop and implement security protocols to protect the cloud infrastructure and applications from security threats.
- Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to cloud infrastructure, applications, and services.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and deploy new applications and services on the cloud platform.
- Develop and implement disaster recovery plans and strategies to ensure business continuity.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, regulations, and best practices.
- Transition internal servers to cloud solutions.
- Create functional-need scripts to ease and simplify administration.
- Adhere to and promote existing ITIL processes and standard procedures as documented.
- Document standard configurations for administered systems.
- Follow Change Management practices.
- Execute sensitive data backup, restoration, and discovery procedures.
- Implement recommended remediation from security and vulnerability audits.
- Maintain a solid understanding of emerging infrastructure technologies and trends.
- Function as an escalation point to assist in diagnosis and resolution of problems for technology solutions.
- Perform root cause analysis on problems and identify action items / recommendations to address issues.
- Perform as cloud administrator for existing Azure implementations. Implement, manage identity, governance, storage, compute, and virtual networks in a cloud environment, plus provision, size, monitor, and adjust resources, when needed. Provide leadership in migrating information, applications, and services into the cloud.
- Determine and implement configurations according to Markel’s Architecture and Security standards.
- Be the subject matter expert for implementing, managing, and monitoring Markel’s Microsoft Azure environment.
- Provide design input and analysis on project milestones; analyze weaknesses and recommend system improvements.
- Configure and manage Azure cloud services and serve as a liaison between Microsoft and the Azure user base.
- Migrate and consult with application owners to migrate on-premises workloads to the cloud.
- Troubleshoot cloud-related issues and resolve them efficiently.
- Update and patch cloud systems to ensure security and stability.
- Implement cost optimization strategies to control cloud spending.
- Conduct regular security audits and compliance.
- Provide technical support to users and answer their cloud-related questions.
- Document cloud processes and procedures for future reference.
- Enforce security policies and access controls for cloud resources.
- Knowledge of firewalls, intrusion detection systems, and other security measures.
- Adhere to industry regulations and compliance standards.
