SUMMARY of RESPONSIBILITIES:
Project management is defined as the discipline that involves "initiating, planning, executing and controlling the work of a team of people towards the achievement of a specific goal or sets of goals". The main goal of project management is to ensure that the objectives of the project are achieved within the specified constraints. Through project management, activities are conducted using various tools, skill sets, knowledge, methodologies and techniques in order to meet the requirements of the project. A Project Manager must have a combination of skills including an ability to ask penetrating questions, detect unstated assumptions and resolve conflicts, as well as more general management skills. A well prepared Project Manager will also have a contingency plan for every situation or circumstance.
The Project Manager is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, implementation, execution, control and completion of the project, ensuring consistency with Q&D's values, vision, strategy, commitments and goals. Their responsibilities include the coordination and completion of the project on time, within budget and within scope. They must oversee all aspects of the project, set deadlines, assign responsibilities, monitor and summarize progress of the project.
Key among a Project Manager's duties is the recognition that risk directly impacts the likelihood of success and that this risk must be both formally and informally measured throughout the course of a project. Risks arise from uncertainty and the successful Project Manager is the one who focusses on this as their primary concern. A good Project Manager can significantly reduce risk by adhering to a policy of open communication; ensuring every member of the project team has an opportunity to express opinions and concerns. Stakeholders should be advised and consulted at the appropriate times during a project. The Project Manager is the person responsible for making decisions, both large and small. The Project Manager should make sure they control risk and minimize uncertainty. Every decision must directly benefit the project.
The Project Manager must be familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices and procedures, relying on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish stated goals. They must also perform a variety of tasks along with leading and direct the work of project staff. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected in order to enhance the Aviation Group's reputation by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests and exploring opportunities to add value to the project.
