A Day in the Life of a Deputy Office Director
As a Deputy Director of our Austin team, you will lead and grow a talented team of professionals and serve as a liaison with our company leadership. Fostering a positive culture and healthy morale while maintaining a productive work environment are integral components of this role, as is managing, mentoring, and recruiting new staff. You will pursue and win work that has a positive impact on communities and oversee staff and project performance to ensure our work is consistently top quality. You will help build and lead a talented local team of planners, engineers, and urban designers working on exciting projects in in Texas, across North America, and collaborating with other offices in the U.S.
Our projects vary in scale: national, state, regional, and local. They encompass research, policy, planning, design guidance, program development, inclusive engagement, implementation, and evaluation. As a Deputy Office Director, you may lead concept to final design, multimodal corridor studies, Vision Zero, Safe Routes to Schools, new mobility and curbside management, trails and greenways, complete streets, and/or access to transit projects.
You lead business development pursuits in your home region as well as across our North American offices. Qualifications of a Deputy Office Director
- A passion for working with a dynamic and diverse team, and an inclusive approach to achieving success
- Degree in Urban Planning, Engineering, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design or a very strong technical understanding of the Architecture and Engineering industry
- A minimum of 10 years of experience in transportation
- Experience building teams along with managing and nurturing staff
- Experience solving problems, putting out fires, and helping others navigate tricky situations
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- A strong interest in multimodal and active transportation design
If would be a plus if you have any of the following:
- Experience pursuing and winning work that is competitively bid
- Experience in consulting or supporting a staff with billable targets
- Experience managing large/complex projects with budgets of $500K or more

Work Schedule for a Deputy Office Director
This full-time position typically works a flexible schedule of 40 hours a week. While this position is temporarily remote, in Austin, when the office opens, it will transition to a hybrid schedule, with the option to work from home 2 days per week.
About our Austin Office
Since 2017, a team of Toole Design engineers and planners have provided full-time, on-site staff augmentation to the City of Austin's Transportation Department to deliver Mobility Bond projects. Our new, standalone Austin office will complement this team by working on a range of planning and design projects across Texas, many of which are already underway. Our vision for our new Austin office is one that is talented, multidisciplinary, diverse, and cohesive.
