Athletic training encompasses the prevention, examination, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of emergent, acute, or chronic injuries and medical conditions. Collaborates with physicians & other providers to provide preventative services, emergency care, clinical diagnosis, therapeutic intervention, and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.
SUMMARY - Orthopedic Technician
- Applies, adjusts, and removes all common orthopedic devices including bracing and splinting. Applies and remove casts
- Fits and adjust scanes, crutches, walkers, and the like, as well as instructs patients on use of these walking aids
- Serves as a knowledge expert for orthopedic device and cast care
- Provides direct instructions to patients regarding orthopedic treatment and care of devices and casts
- Responsible for brace measurement
- Assists with minor orthopedic procedures
- Performs negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) under the direct supervision of a licensed provider or registered nurse
- Assists with purchasing and inventory of all orthopedic supplies, including supplies for all nursing services
- Provides direction and guidance to the medical assistant
- Cleans equipment and rooms
- When appropriate, and under the direct supervision of licensed nursing personnel, renders some portion of basic nursing care as requested
- Provides various support activities for professional staff
- Accurately documents, as appropriate, all care rendered to patients
- Responsible for reviewing patient chart and x-rays prior to providing patient care
- Provides wound/pin care and instructs patients on home wound care
- Provides suture, pin, and staple removal
- Performs basic patient care activities, including placing patients in exam rooms as requested
- Other duties as assigned
RESPONSIBILITIES - Athletic Trainer
- Assessment and treatment of patients with orthopedic conditions
- Treatment and Rehabilitation - Technical training and proficiency in skills related to application of casting material, special braces and orthopedic soft goods
- Injury and Illness Prevention and Wellness Promotion
- Clinical Evaluation and Diagnosis under provider direction
- Applies / removes protective or injury-preventive devices such as tape, bandages, casting, and braces under provider direction
- Prepares for injections, changes dressings, applies durable medical equipment, and removes sutures/staples underprovider direction
- Provides first aid or emergency care
- Assists provider with minor orthopedic procedures
- Gathers and verifies pertinent patient information; compiles patient medical data
- Assists with documentation of patient data into electronic health records system
- Ensures coding requirements are followed during entry of patient information
- Maintains an efficient, organized clinical flow
- Acts as a prescribing delegate to enter medical orders (i.e. medications, laboratory services, imaging studies and other auxiliary services into the computerized provider order entry (CPOE) into patient electronic records under the direct supervision of the provider
- Prepares, stock, and cleans exam room
- Rooms patients and prepares for exam
- Any and all other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS - Athletic Trainer
Minimum Education / Work Experience
- Certified Athletic Trainer (AT-C)
Knowledge / Skills / Abilities
- Understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology required
- Knowledge of diagnostic procedures, pharmacology, and treatment assessments required
- Ability to articulate descriptions of orthopedic conditions based on the understanding of anatomical structures and their relationship with one another
- Ability to prioritize work based on volume and deadlines
- Knowledge of proper application of aseptic techniques, dressing changes, wound care and removal of sutures, staples, pins, K-wires, and set up of surgical fields
- Strong organizational and customer service skills
- Ability to work well in a critical environment and be detail oriented
Preferred Qualifications
- One or more years of experience in a clinical setting
License/ Certifications
- Certified Athletic Trainer (AT-C) required
- High school graduation or GED
- Two (2) years of cast experience in an orthopedic facility or certification as an orthopedic technician
OR
- An approved equivalent combination of education and experience
- Ability to articulate descriptions of orthopedic conditions based on the understanding of anatomical structures and their relationship with one another
- Knowledge of proper application of aseptic techniques, dressing changes, wound care, and removal of sutures, staples, pins, K-wires, and set up of surgical fields
- Certification by the National Association of Orthopedic Technologists (NAOT) or the National Board for Certification of Orthopedic Technologists (NBCOT) will substitute for 2 years of cast experience
