POSITION: Assistant Plant Manager
REPORTS TO: General Manager

JOB SUMMARY
The Assistant Manager will assist in managing and directing all site operations, overall continuous improvement, maintenance, production, quality control, and community relations. This position is responsible for upholding compliance in state and federal regulations. Must have at least 5 years of experience in the mining or related industry required. Responsibilities:
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Drive a culture of safety, promote a safe work environment, ensuring safety compliance with all local, state, and federal safety & environmental laws.
- Promote a focus on our customers’ needs and anticipate and respond to changes in their demands.
- Develop and manage annual budgets, track and analyze KPI’s, and overall P&L activity.
- Continual evaluation and improvement of operational and cost efficiency with direct production efforts.
- Ability to understand and work with Quality Control to maximize product specifications and minimize waste by ensuring quality control standards are met and company quality programs are followed.
- Troubleshoot and resolve operational, manufacturing, & maintenance problems to ensure minimum costs and prevent operational delays.
- Ensure company policies and guidelines are followed to ensure compliance with local, state, & federal regulations.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with staff, employees, and managers.
- Maintain company assets in good operational condition & recommend capital replacement where warranted.
- Drive and instill a culture of continuous improvement.
Background & Experience Requirements:
Candidates should have a BS in Mining Engineering or equivalent experience in the mining industry.
Other Requirements:
- Solid working knowledge of aggregate production and related equipment, as well as an extensive understanding of operations & safety requirements for all applicable machinery and equipment.
- Must be able to analyze options by possessing strong leadership and decision-making skills, thereby making the best decision for the business.
- Knowledge of state & federal employment, safety, and environmental laws required.
- Must possess or be able to obtain Virginia DMME and VDOT certifications.
- Ability to present facts and recommendations effectively and efficiently in oral and written form.
- Be proficient in the use of standard MS office programs.
- Must be willing to relocate to Harrisonburg or within close proximity to quarry.
- Must have experience in creating and maintaining capital and operating budgets.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of plant and equipment maintenance. This includes visual observation of both stationary and mobile equipment, work order planning and scheduling, work order execution, lubrication requirements, crusher, conveyor, bearing, pulley, and screen maintenance, and embracing of the gold maintenance standard. Metalwork, including welding and burning is desirable. Ability to read and understand equipment manuals pertaining to operation, parts, maintenance and assembly (schematics as needed) is also required. Electrical knowledge, including troubleshooting and knowledge of plant automation controls, is highly desirable.
- Knowledge of geology and pit development. This includes basic geology, deposit characteristics, high wall examination, basic ramp and haul road layout, and blast design. Must have basic knowledge of stripping operations and dump layout. Must also be familiar with load, haul, dump cycles. Time study experience is desirable.
- Knowledgeable of MSHA, DMME, and DEQ standards and requirements. DEQ visual examination certification is desirable.
- Knowledge of hazards associated with areas of responsibility. Must be able to perform workplace examinations.
- Knowledge of basic first aid with certification including AED and CPR.
- Ability to effectively lead and direct the work force.
- Ability to make informed decisions.
- Ability to maintain quality control standards by interfacing with lab personnel. VDOT CMA certification is desirable.
- Ability to deal with complex worker relationships and foster a teamwork atmosphere.
- Ability to interact with the scale house and sales personnel to meet or exceed customer expectations.
- Ability to work within constraints to meet safety, production, and cost goals.
- Ability to reason through difficult operations/maintenance problems and resolve said problems.
- Knowledge of storeroom and tool room procedures.
- Ability to determine equipment conditions by visual observation and listening to its operation.
- Ability to remove and install guards and other equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to operate maintenance trucks, forklifts and man lifts (standard and automatic).
- Possess excellent work ethic and safety record.
- Ability to participate in and deliver toolbox talks.
- Ability to perform job safety risk assessments.
- Ability to clean up the workplace after the job.
- Ability to ensure good housekeeping in the shop and in the plant.
- Must understand and comply with lock-out procedure and safety requirements.
- Must have legible handwriting and ability to use email, Microsoft Word, and Excel.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Physical requirements include visual acuity, speech and hearing, hand and eye coordination, standing, sitting, walking, climbing stairs, climbing on equipment, bending, stooping, crouching, kneeling, pushing, pulling, reaching, twisting, balancing, climbing on equipment, working at heights up to 350 feet, repetitive motion, and squatting - all for extended periods of time (up to 12 hours) to perform the essential functions.
- Must be able to use proper Personal Protective Equipment as required.
- Walk/stand on uneven ground, walkways and catwalks throughout the work day.
- Manually position crane lifted parts and equipment. Physically lift up to 75 lbs. parts waist high for mounting into position.
- Ability to work in tight areas to install and handle heavy parts
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Must work outside in all weather conditions: heat, cold, dust, and wet a minimum of 8 hrs. per day. Work in high noise level areas while wearing proper PPE. May have exposure to dust, diesel exhaust, lubricants, solvents, various fuels, etc.
- Must be able to workdays or nights as required during equipment outages.
- Must be able to work overtime as required by job.
