GENERAL PURPOSE:
In addition to the duties of an Optician, directs the administrative and operational procedures of an Ophthalmology facility. Provides comprehensive patient care related to patient evaluation, prescription recommendation, eyewear selection, fitting and purchase, and coordination with other health care professionals. Supervises other optical shop staff including Opticians, Optical Assistants, Contact Lens specialists and other support staff.
**JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:**
1. Manages the daily operation of an Ophthalmology facility, which includes a finishing laboratory. Supervises other optical shop staff including Opticians, Optical Assistants, Contact Lens specialists and other support staff. Writes performance reviews, conducts coaching and training as needed, and is responsible for professional development of subordinates.
2. Fills ophthalmic eyeglass prescriptions specified by the MD or OD and makes final adjustments to the eyewear to the satisfaction of the patient. Evaluates prescriptions with consideration of the patients' vocational and recreational visual requirements. Makes recommendations for lenses (including contact lenses), lens coatings, and frames to suit patient needs.
3. Measures patients' bridge and eye size, temple length, vertex distance, pupillary distance, and optical centers of eyes using a millimeter rule and light reflex pupilometer. Determines patient¿s current lens prescription by using a lensometer or lens analyzer and patient's current eyeglasses.
4. Assists patients in selecting frames according to style, color, coordinating frames with facial and eye measurements and ophthalmic prescription. Instructs patients in adapting to, wearing and caring for eyeglasses and/or contact lenses.
5. Manages service support; inventory, equipment maintenance and repair, requisitioning of supplies, and materials.
6. Manages the work of clerical support; invoicing patients, cash handling, and financial arrangements with patients or responsible third-party to cover charges. Recommends expenditures for major equipment to Department Chair. Authorizes expenditures for expendable supplies and maintenance. Accurately uses and maintains specialized software to maintain customer database, sales and report financial transactions.
7. Selects and maintains retail inventory which involves meeting with sales representatives, ordering frames, lenses and other supplies. Recommends inventory decisions by analyzing trends and customer demands. Creates innovative pleasing displays of merchandise to entice purchases.
8. Establishes and maintains relationships with optical labs, finishing laboratories and suppliers for the purpose of purchasing inventory, collecting equipment/product information or resolving equipment/product problems. Participates in trunk shows throughout the University in conjunction with Marketing and special sale events at selected University locations.
9. Attends Optician vendor shows, exhibitions and trade shows for the purpose of keeping abreast of new ophthalmic retail trends and purchasing supplies.
**QUALIFICATIONS:**
Associate's degree required; Bachelor's degree preferred. 2-3 years of related experience involving direct patient contact required or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. 5 years of related experience preferred. Must have appropriate NYS license and certification as specified.

**Pay Range**
Pay Range: $27.69 - $38.75 Hourly
_The referenced pay range represents the minimum and maximum compensation for this job. Individual annual salaries/hourly rates will be set within the job’s compensation range, and will be determined by considering factors including, but not limited to, market data, education, experience, qualifications, expertise of the individual, and internal equity considerations._
