About the Job
We are a leading Research Institution seeking an experienced professional to join our team as the AVC for Finance and Sponsored Projects. With substantial funding and a robust annual budget, this role oversees the Sponsored Projects Accounting (SPA) and Office of Sponsored Research Services (OSRS). Reporting to both the Executive Vice Chancellor for Finance & CFO and the Vice Chancellor for Research, the AVC ensures effective administration of operational and compliance functions critical to managing sponsored projects. SPA & OSRS are pivotal in serving as the institutional signatory for our university's sponsored projects.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Act as the primary liaison for faculty, departmental, and central office staff, maintaining a strong service orientation and providing expertise on sponsoring agencies' policies and practices.
Manage SPA operations including billing, accounts receivable, federal letters of credit, and financial reporting to external sponsors across various sectors. Ensure timely review and approval of expense transactions within the Workday (WD) FIN system.
Lead OSRS in reviewing and submitting proposals for extramural funding, ensuring compliance with internal and external policies to avoid funding delays or application returns.
Oversee the award process, ensuring accuracy of awards and adherence to regulatory requirements. Manage agency grant negotiations, distribution of award notices, and setup of related accounts in WD FIN.
Coordinate implementation of fringe benefit and F&A rates in WD and RMS for SPA & OSRS.
Support effort reporting cycles, collaborating with departments and internal audit to resolve reporting issues.
Optimize research-related systems functionality and provide guidance to steering committees. Partner with the Data Governance team to ensure data accuracy and consistency.
Develop and deliver training to SPA/OSRS staff to enhance research administration capabilities. Establish performance standards and assess training needs to align competencies with university goals.
Direct department operations and contribute to policy and procedure design. Collaborate with departmental leadership to align goals and integrate workflow effectively.
Oversee SPA staffing including recruitment, hiring, and performance management.
Collaborate with HR on workforce planning, budget requests, and compensation planning.
Serve as Data Steward for Research Administration and participate in IT governance committees.
Working Conditions
This is a remote position with occasional travel to campus locations for meetings and approximately six to eight domestic trips per year for professional meetings and seminars.
Preferred Qualifications
Business degree with Finance and/or Accounting emphasis.
Masters in Business Administration.
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation.
Strong financial analytical skills.
Ability to interpret and apply compliance regulations effectively.
Proven experience in team management and fostering a positive organizational culture.
Excellent communication and negotiation skills.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and fifteen-plus years of experience in finance and research administration at a large research-intensive organization, university, or medical school.
Management experience in a research setting supporting innovative researchers.
Expertise in grants management across government, non-profit, and industry sectors.
Minimum of ten years working with large ERP systems, preferably Workday.
