About the Job
- Provides legal guidance on and solutions to global trade compliance matters, including export controls, deemed exports, sanctions and embargos, anti-boycott laws, product classifications, export licensing, product diversion, global trade contract provisions, and customs and import-related matters in support of global operations
- Partners with Coherent's Global Trade Compliance Operations Team to develop innovative strategies to address and manage shifts in trade compliance risk, including changes in trade policy - and law - across jurisdictions where Coherent operates (NA, EMEA, and APAC)
- Conducts trade-related investigations and supports issue mitigation and resolutions
- Develops new ideas and methods to effectively address legal issues and mitigate trade compliance risk
- Identifies and resolves complex legal issues requiring in-depth analysis, specialized knowledge, and sound judgment
- Manages and contributes to mission-critical, multifaceted projects, including transactions
- Balances Company business interests with fiduciary responsibility
- Conducts and manages M&A trade compliance due diligence
- Interacts with partners, suppliers, customers, industry organizations and other regulatory bodies as needed
- Coordinates with other global functions and business units on global trade policy and advocacy matters
- Manages outside trade counsel
Education & Experience
- A Juris Doctor Degree (JD) and admitted to practice law in good standing in at least one U.S. state or the District of Columbia
- Preferred 12-plus years of legal experience as in-house counsel or in an attorney/management consultant position at a Big 4, but relevant law firm or government agency experience will be considered
- Preferred experience providing global trade-related legal advice at an international company in the semiconductor or tech industry
- Extensive experience with U.S. trade controls (EAR, ITAR, OFAC, Customs), as well as other international trade control regimes
- Significant experience managing multiple complex projects in a fast-paced environment

- Ability to effectively navigate conflict and effectively resolve issues
- Availability to speak with colleagues in international time zones is required
- Ability to maintain trust and confidentiality.
Working Conditions
- Ability to work full-time during core business hours in a remote (home-office) or in-office setting
- Ability to work extended hours (early morning, evening , or weekend), when necessary
- Ability to travel domestically and internationally, when necessary

The attorney will also serve as partner and legal advisor to internal clients across the Company, including the Global Trade Compliance Team, other in-house counsel, and Company leadership. This position reports directly to the General Counsel, Global Compliance. The trade compliance attorney will work with others in designing and implementing trade compliance solutions across the company, driving trade-related investigations and resolutions, advising on customs matters and requirements, and interacting with regulators.This position may be fully remote or located at one of Coherent's offices in the U.S.
