Job Description

Plans, directs and manages radiation and laser safety programs and develops, maintains and promotes policies, procedures and programs to ensure compliance with regulations, laws and regulatory agencies. Reports to Assistant Vice President.

Essential Duties

• Plans, directs and manages the Radiation and Laser safety programs on a daily basis which includes, all activities associated complying with federal, state and local requirements. Serves as the University’s radiation and laser safety officer. 
• Responsible for ensuring that the systems are in place for the safe, secure and environmentally responsible use and management of radiological materials and associated waste, radiation-producing devices, lasers and x-ray equipment.
• Evaluates research and applies results to prevention and control of radiation hazards for both ionizing and regulated sources of non-ionizing radiation.
• Conducts radiation exposure measurements of people and laboratories to ensure safety and address identified issues.
• Maintains records and supporting data for required government, industry and management reports.
• Stays abreast of current and proposed changes in Federal, State, and Industry radiation protection regulations. Serves as subject matter expert on training development.
• Ensures implementation and delivery of training to the University community.
• Recommends University based policies and procedures for the uses of radioisotopes, radiation-generating devices, lasers and regulated non-ionizing radiation to ensure compliance with ABOR policies, university procedures and applicable laws and regulations pertaining to the control of radiological materials and lasers.
• Recommends and develops policies and procedures to include: inspection standards, safe-work methods, decontamination procedures.
• Serves as a member of the ASU Radiation Safety Committee and reviews all research and teaching activities governed by this committee; provides subject matter expertise to other university safety committees.
• Audits programs and provides consultation to the university community regarding safe and legal handling of radioactive materials; recommends University based policies and procedures for the uses of radioisotopes, radiation-generating devices, lasers to ensure compliance with University policies and procedures, public health laws and regulations pertaining to the radioactive control programs, through established university procedures.
• Serves as an emergency responder and participates in the on-call schedule.
• Assists the EHS spill team, responding to emergency situations involving contamination or potential releases of radiological materials; responds to accidents involving lasers and x-rays.
• Investigates serious incidents, including close calls and near misses related to the use of radiological materials or lasers.
• Identifies potential problem areas which require priority attention in order to prevent situations from reoccurring which could adversely impact the program.
• Develops and implements discipline-specific programs (such as planning, training, auditing and communication programs) to ensure that all individuals within discipline are informed of required regulatory standards to the extent that official agencies inspecting the location find no fault and therefore cannot issue citation, penalties, fines or take any other legal action against the organization.
• Conducts renovation/construction plan reviews and on-site safety reviews for regulatory compliance involving radiation producing devices.
• Prepares regulatory compliance reports that fairly and objectively details the inspection results and recommended action.

Minimum Qualifications

Masters degree in radiation science, physical science or a biological science and seven (7) years radiation and laser safety program oversight; a minimum of four (4) years of supervisory experience, Or, any equivalent combination of experience or education from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved, plus possession of a current Arizona driver's license upon employment. 

Desired Qualifications

• Demonstrated knowledge of modern radiation principles related to the recognition, prevention and control of radiation health hazards both ionizing and non-ionizing. 
• Demonstrated knowledge of the function of an academic research laboratory.
• Demonstrated knowledge of current safe laboratory procedures in the use of radioisotopes and radiation producing devices.
• Demonstrated knowledge of current federal (e.g., NRC, USDA) and state regulations and university policies.
• Direct experience serving as a Radiation and safety

Working Environment

• Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse (75 %); required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work (10 %).
• Ability to clearly communicate to perform essential functions.
• Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds (15 %).
• Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include or are subject to resolution of conflicts.
• Understands operating principles and applications of emergency response equipment and is capable of using equipment in the field during emergencies or while covering for staff that may be absent.
• Works in highly dangerous areas with uncontained or spilled hazardous materials (1%).
• This position work with potentially hazardous agents or physical hazards
• This position may require the person to wear a respirator for their job
