POSITION OVERVIEW:
We seek a dynamic and experienced individual to be the next Associate Director of the Research and Engineering Center. The AD undertakes on-site leadership responsibilities, overseeing talented personnel and spearheading the management of ongoing projects while crafting proposals for new initiatives. The AD formulates long-term strategic plans for the laboratory's growth and impact while collaborating with all departments, National Laboratories, and Industrial Sponsors. Additionally, the AD may be able to participate in research activities directly.
The Research and Engineering Center, part of the Laboratory for Nuclear Science (LNS), hosts diverse research projects, ranging from experimental nuclear and particle physics to accelerator applications to climate change mitigation. The team specializes in engineering and technical support for crucial nuclear and particle physics experiments and “tough tech” projects. Collaborating with researchers from the university and other institutions, we design, construct, and operate particle detectors, small accelerators, magnets, and mid-scale advanced climate mitigation technology demonstrators. We collaborate with and support scientists and engineers from the world’s best national and international laboratories and universities.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS):
- Oversee the active projects at the laboratory, supervise personnel, and serve as the primary point of contact for the laboratory.
- Cultivate potential users of the space and develop collaborative research proposals for new projects and collaborations.
- Develop and implement strategic plans for optimizing use of the site and personnel.
- Represent to external stakeholders and act as a conduit to local government.
- Work closely with the LNS Fiscal Office on a wide array of reporting and compliance-related tasks, including creating financial and progress reports, reviewing project spending, and performing financial projections.
- Serve as Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Co-coordinator.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
Work with the LNS Administrator for HR, EHS, and Facilities on personnel mattersRequired:
- Fifteen years of experience in a related technical field
- Five years of supervisory experience
- Proven leadership experience successfully managing technical research projects, including costs, schedules, personnel, and reporting.
- Experience and research interests that align with present and planned research activities
- Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills
Preferred:
- Ph.D. in physics or Master’s in engineering/engineering management
- Experience at a national laboratory, university, or related industries.
- Experience with interfacing with environment, health, and safety groups
