Job Description
***Only qualified Budget Business Analyst candidates located near the San Diego, CA area to be considered due to the position requiring an onsite presence***
Education:
• Bachelor’s degree (required), preferably in Accounting or Finance.
Must-Haves for this role:
• Financial Analysis: Proven experience in financial analysis and budgets analysis
• Excel Proficiency: Strong analytical skills in Excel with the ability to quickly identify trends and issues
• Critical Thinking: Exceptional critical thinking skills are essential
• Experience: 2–3 years in an Analyst position
• Academic Environment: Prior experience in an academic setting is a must
Responsibilities:
• Collaborate with the principal investigator to prepare the administrative components of proposals in compliance with sponsored and non-sponsored research guidelines
• Manage and communicate the submission process for both paper and electronic formats, ensuring all documents are complete and compliant
• Develop, prepare, and finalize project budgets, including providing detailed budget justifications
• Act as the primary liaison and active partner between principal investigators, the Office of Sponsored Research, research teams, and other departments
• Address sponsor inquiries promptly and professionally
• Work closely with the Office of Sponsored Research to ensure proper award setup and fulfillment of cost-sharing requirements
• Initiate and manage cost transfers as needed.
• Review and approve expenditures while advising on post-award spending and commitment activities. Ensure compliance with funding and revenue policies
• Prepare and deliver reports detailing project status, offering effective forecasting tools and decision-making support.
• Manage the contract closeout process, including submitting final reports and certifications. Compile necessary information and documentation for audit inquiries
• Interpret, apply, and provide guidance on university and government policies related to research projects
• Serve as a subject matter expert and technical resource for principal investigators and university staff
• Contribute to and lead process improvement initiatives. Provide leadership and guidance to staff in collaborative group projects
