immediate opening for an Assistant Underwriter. The (AU) is a member of the Underwriting Processing Unit assigned to a single Underwriting TEAM. Reports directly to a UW Processing Supervisor for daily performance of duties and responds directly to processing requests from the TEAM underwriters; has a secondary reporting responsibility to the Lead Underwriting Process Supervisor with respect to maintaining performance standards, attendance policy, maintaining TEAM relations and acting on identified service issues requiring correction and improvement. The AU’s primary responsibility is to provide technical support to the Underwriting TEAM by assuring timely and accurate processing, delivery, and servicing of insurance products, to the satisfaction of both the Underwriters of their TEAM and our external customers which are the Members and the brokerages that represent them. Their secondary responsibility is to ensure accurate invoicing and follow up in the collections of all premiums billed.
Job Requirements:
- Minimum 1 year of business experience desired; experience in the insurance industry a plus
- Undergraduate degree; degree in a business related field a plus
- Professional insurance designation desired
- Working knowledge of insurance terms, concepts, products and coverages; prior experience in an insurance company/broker environment a desired
- Demonstrated knowledge of the processes associated rating, quoting, binding and issuing an insurance policy a plus
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office: specifically Word and Excel
- Working knowledge of technical underwriting rating systems desired

Essential Job Functions:
- Support the Underwriting TEAM by monitoring and managing workload through the use of Work In Progress reports, to ensure Underwriting Performance Standards as respects time service are met; this requires daily communications with the Underwriters to alert them to work priorities regarding potential quote and policy issuance aging violations
- Ensure that all submissions (new and renewal) are properly set up with accurate and complete Member and Broker information; for renewals, monitor and follow up with the Member or Broker if necessary to ensure that a complete application is received, and assemble all information needed by the Underwriter to begin the Underwriting process; enter the submission information into the Underwriting Operating System; at the request of the Underwriter, this may involve the initial set up of the quote by entering risk and exposure information into the Underwriting Operating System to create a preliminary quote
- As directed by the Underwriter, prepare quote letters, develop and process binders and invoices in accordance with Underwriting processing procedures and standards; once a policy is booked, develop and process the policy in accordance with Underwriting processing procedures, quality and time standards
- Upon receiving a policy change request (PCR), properly document the receipt of the request, obtain the Underwriter’s instructions and authority, and process the PCR in accordance with Underwriting processing quality and time standards
- Assist the Underwriter TEAM in resolving issues that surface with respect to individual accounts, including interfacing with Brokers and Members to resolve such service problems (identify problem, gather information, obtain a decision or action authorization, initiate corrective action, report action internally and externally as required, monitor satisfaction with implemented solution, etc.)
- Follow Premium Collection Procedures and standard by monitoring on a weekly basis the Premium Collection Warning Report; this entails following up with the Broker or Member on uncollected premiums over 30-days after billing or effective date and escalating premiums not collected to the Underwriter after 65-days
- Work collaboratively with all members of the Underwriting TEAM, UW Processing Management, and other employees to achieve corporate, Division and Processing Unit objectives and accountabilities
- Identify deficiencies in existing procedures and processes pertaining to processing and suggest solutions to the Process Supervisor or Lead Underwriting Process Supervisor
- Serve as back-up to and resource for other Service Team members as needed
- Assist in special projects as needed
- Maintain Underwriting Performance Standards in respects to quality and processing timeliness in order to achieve superior customer services for accounts processed by the TEAM; providing administrative support to the TEAM by managing workflow in order to prevent processing violations associated with time service
- Accurately proof all documents in respects to grammar, spelling, technical consistency with processing practices and standards
- Working with external customers, Underwriters and various Divisions to investigate and resolve individual account issues; coordinating and facilitating internal response to such problems and communicating results
- Developing and maintaining a professional relationship with Members and/or the brokerages representing them; maintaining an awareness of individual account and Broker satisfaction levels though customer follow-ups to services provided, and identifying deficiencies for prompt resolution
- Fostering a spirit of cooperation and teamwork within the Underwriting Division
- Developing technical efficiency as well as product and coverage knowledge of the lines of business in which the TEAM processes
