About the Job
Job Description
The Department of Philosophy & Religion invites applications for a tenure-track position in Christian religion at the Assistant Professor rank. This is a full-time faculty position carrying a 4-4 teaching load with a start date of August 2025. Teaching and service responsibilities are carried out annually across nine-months, while salary is paid over 12 months. The search committee is especially interested in candidates who, through their research, teaching, and/or service, will contribute to the diversity and excellence of our academic community. Applicants with specializations in underrepresented perspectives/criticisms are especially encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities include teaching courses primarily for the undergraduate general education religion curriculum, with opportunity for teaching upper-division religion courses, engaging in an ongoing research agenda, and providing service to the department and University. Teaching responsibilities will primarily involve courses related to the Christian tradition such as Introduction to Christianity, Christian Theology, and History of Christianity, including Christianity in America. The department values course curriculums that engage with gender, (dis)ability, race/ethnicity, sexuality, class, and social issues related to religion and/or highlight the perspectives of historically oppressed or excluded social groups. Ability to develop and teach first-year writing-focused special topics seminars in religion, religion honors courses, and/or interdisciplinary courses is desirable. Candidates who hold United Methodist (UMC) ordination or are currently in the process of obtaining ordination are preferred, though this is not a requirement of the position. The ability to engage students in vocational discussions is also considered a valuable asset. The successful candidate will have a commitment to excellence in teaching that fosters experiential learning, diverse perspectives, service for impact, and a global mindset.
To receive full consideration for the position, all application materials must be received by January 31st, 2024.
Required Qualifications:
- Ph.D in Religious Studies, Theology, Church History or a related field in religion by time of appointment
