Position Announcement
The University of Oregon’s Department of Political Science invites applications for a tenure-track position for an Assistant Professor in Political Science specializing in inequality in the United States—its political, economic, cultural and/or social dimensions. This search will encourage applicants representing varied methods and approaches, ranging from causal inference and machine learning to American Political Development (APD) and political theory. This position will begin in fall 2025.
Competitive applicants will be capable of outstanding research and teaching at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
Department or Program Summary
Our department is committed to recruiting and retaining a culturally diverse and pluralistic faculty. We encourage applications from all qualified candidates, and strongly encourage women faculty, faculty of color and faculty with disabilities to apply. We are especially interested in candidates who can support our work in mentoring, research, teaching, and outreach with women, first-generation students, communities of color, and other underrepresented groups. All applicants are requested to include in their cover letter information about how they will contribute to this work.
In addition to our focus on research excellence, our department is constantly adjusting to improve our undergraduate and graduate experience. For example, in recent years we have revised our undergraduate curriculum to feature students’ career-related pathways, gathered statistics to lessen equity gaps in gateway-class outcomes, reformed our graduate curriculum to strengthen cohorts’ common training, and streamlined the process for graduate qualifying exams.
Junior faculty in political science will be supported through the transition to tenure, including reduced service expectations and access to university-wide programs (which include new faculty mentorship, and training in teaching through the Teaching Engagement Program). The political science department invests in the success of each new colleague and seeks to support faculty in successful and impactful careers while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
Minimum Requirements
• Ph.D. in Political Science or related field in hand by time of appointment.
• The successful candidate is expected to have conducted a rigorous research program as well as have the ability teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
