Job Summary
Under the direction of our Provost, the Assistant Principal of Special Education will oversee and direct all aspects of Butler Academy’s Student Support Services, including Special Education, ESOL, MTSS, and 504 programs. This role involves coordinating day-to-day operations, educational services, and instructional guidance. The Assistant Principal will advise on legal issues, support teachers and parents, supervise service delivery, monitor compliance, and mentor staff. Key responsibilities include serving as the Local Education Agency Representative, managing program compliance, and ensuring the fidelity of instructional models across various support services. This position is crucial for fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students.

Dean of Students Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree required
- Higher degree preferred
- Licensure preference in Learning Disabilities or Multi-Categorical in the state of South Carolina (K-12)
- 10+ years of experience working with students
Responsibilities
- Advise the School President and other Leadership Team members on all legal issues related to student support policies, procedures and services
- Advise all teaching staff on the legally required provision of services and accommodations in the general education and special education settings
- Advise all teaching staff on ILAP (Individualized Language Acquisition Plan) implementation
- Advise parents and provide information regarding Special Education, 504, ILAPs, and related service provisions at BA
- Serve as a liaison between parents, teachers, school nurse and medical personnel as needed
- Serve on all IEP Teams as the Local Education Agency (LEA) Representative
- Supervise all special education delivery services to include monitoring the implementation of all IEP services for fidelity of instructional model
- Secure and monitor contract personnel as needed for the provision of psychological, counseling, speech therapy, occupational therapy, and physical therapy services
- Observe, guide and mentor special education teachers with attention to baseline, summative, and formative assessments
- Conduct referrals, facilitate evaluations and develop 504 plans based upon these evaluations
- Secure and monitor contract personnel as needed for the provision of psychological, speech therapy, occupational therapy, counseling and physical therapy services
- Serve on all ILAP Teams as the Local Education Agency Representative
- Supervise all ELL delivery services to include monitoring the implementation of all ILAPs services for fidelity of instructional model
- Secure and monitor contract personnel for interpretation services as needed
- Observe, guide and mentor ESOL teacher(s) with attention to baseline, summative, and formative assessments regarding Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking
- Update yearly the policies and procedures for MTSS implementation
- Create and update the intervention team paperwork and process
- Train staff on the implementation of response to intervention (RtI)
- Process RtI referrals and oversee Literacy Coach in her role in MTSS meetings
- Review data from counseling universal screeners to create small groups based on student results
- Create and coordinate Student Support Specialists schedules to meet small group/individual needs for students in Tier 2 and/or 3
- Partner with Dean of Academics to ensure intervention fidelity and compliant data collection
- Develop intensive need plans for students in Tier 3 behavior status with all stakeholders involved
- Address student discipline issues on an as needed basis
- Serve as Team Lead for the SEL Team (Counseling & Yoga)
- Support our school counselors in the administration, planning, implementation and evaluation of counseling services.
- Review and revise as needed policies and procedures for the implementation of IEP, ILAP and 504 accommodations, modifications and interventions for monitoring special education and related services
- Provide timely reporting of all requested data from the SCPCSD and South Carolina Department of Education
- Conduct regular student support staff meetings
- Monitor proper coding in PowerSchool
- Coordinate with all general education teachers, special education teachers, ESOL teachers and contracted service providers to schedule and ensure compliance with all student support programs.
- Coordinate and conduct classroom observations and testing (i.e. psychological) as needed
- Facilitate least restrictive environment placement of students with disabilities
- Coach Special Education teacher(s) regarding progress monitoring results and student assessment data that translates into measurable results for students
- Facilitate least restrictive environment placement of ELLs to include those in monitoring status to those with service hours on ILAPs
- Coach ESOL teacher(s) regarding progress monitoring results and student assessment data that translates into measurable results for students
- Coach general education teachers regarding implementation of accommodations in the general education setting
