DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW:
The Player Development department is dedicated to fostering the comprehensive growth of our minor league players. Our mission is to excel in optimizing talent and skill development while aligning with player and team objectives. Our approach involves the creation of world class player programs and efficiently scaling them across our player pool. Collaborating closely with baseball analytics, performance, and medical, we establish effective frameworks for experimentation and learning. Additionally, we work closely with Amateur Scouting, International Scouting, and Pro Scouting to ensure seamless player transitions into the Red Sox organization.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Assistant Affiliate Pitching Coach will be responsible for implementing and maintaining the organizations pitching philosophy at their assigned affiliate. Reporting to the Director, Pitching and necessary auxiliary staff, this role will focus on individual pitcher development and implement, execute, and track evidence-based pitching development. A successful candidate will work collaboratively with the Pitching Coach, other minor league coaching staff, strength and condition professionals, medical staff and performance analysts to ensure comprehensive development and progress tracking of the pitching staff at the affiliate. This is a uniformed position that will assist in the daily fulfillment of individual player plans.
As the Red Sox continue to build a team capable of being the standard in player and staff development, and as an Affiliate Pitching Coach the candidate will have a significant impact on shaping the future talent pipeline. The Red Sox are looking for candidates who are organized, detail-oriented, intellectually curious, data-driven, and open-minded. Due to the nature of the role, the candidate must also possess strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork/leadership skills.
Candidates are strongly encouraged to relocate to Fort Myers, FL. Pre-Season Spring Training, Spring Training, and off-season camps are in Fort Myers and this candidate is required to attend. This position will be based at one of our minor league affiliates during the competitive season.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Implement the pitching philosophy and process developed by the Director, Pitching.
- Collaborate with Pitching Coordinator and Pitching Coach to create and implement daily pitching practice plans.
- Supporting the Pitching Coach, monitor, assess, and track pitcher performance, focusing on pitch design, command and mechanics improvement.
- Utilize data analytics, biomechanics, and sport science inputs to ensure optimized pitcher development.
- Alongside the Pitching Coach, provide regular feedback and instruction to players based on performance data and direct observation.
- Coordinate with the Pitching Coach to organize the workday and maximize efficiency.
- Deliver Advanced Reports and Game Plans to pitchers.
- Operate and utilize tools such as Trackman, Edgertronic, Internal software, and others.
- Support the Pitching Coach during Player Performance Meetings and help report on pitcher goal performance to the player and staff.
- Ensure proper execution and tracking of pitching technology tools, including bullpen reports and after-action reviews.
- Maintain consistent communication with the Pitching Coach and other staff as needed/asked - Pitching Coordinators and Director, other affiliate staff, to streamline the integration of players promoted or demoted.
- Attend and assist during MiLB Spring Training.
COMPETENCIES
- Extensive experience evaluating and prescribing best-in-class drills to address deficiencies in each individual player.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to connect with and develop athletes.
- Strong knowledge of modern pitching techniques, data analysis, technology and the ability to utilize this knowledge to maximize effectiveness of programming.
- Understanding and ability to develop programming and construct training environments that put position players in a position to improve skill and/or talent.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate within a multi-disciplinary team, including performance staff and data analysts.
- Able to develop key takeaways from large amounts of data to identify high leverage areas of development for each player.
