A large dairy in Virginia is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Assistant Manager to oversee the day-to-day operations of a large dairy farm. The ideal candidate will be a hands-on manager who is passionate about animal care, herd health, and employee development. This role requires expertise in cow management, AI breeding, herd health, and dairy nutrition. As the role evolves, the Assistant Manager will transition from direct management to a more supervisory role, focusing on training, employee development, and overall operational efficiency. The Assistant Manager will also work closely with nutritionists, veterinarians, and vendors to ensure the farm runs smoothly and productively.Key Responsibilities:Cow Management
- Oversee the daily care and management of the dairy herd, ensuring health, productivity, and optimal milking performance. Manage breeding programs, AI breeding protocols, calving, lactation, and dry-off cycles.
- Directly supervise 20 employees, providing training and guidance to ensure high standards of animal care, milking procedures, and farm operations. The role will transition to a more supervisory position as employees gain experience and proficiency.
- Actively involved in the daily operations of the farm, including milking, monitoring herd health, and troubleshooting any issues that arise. Foster a culture of continuous learning and improvement among employees.
- Work closely with nutritionists to manage feeding programs, veterinarians to address health concerns, and vendors to ensure the proper delivery of medications, equipment, and supplies.
- Inventory and Supply Management
- Oversee the inventory of medications, vaccines, and other health-related supplies. Place orders for drugs and medical supplies while managing stock levels. Does not involve purchasing commodities.
- Equipment and Facility Monitoring
- Monitor the performance of farm equipment and facilities, conducting regular inspections and ensuring everything is in good working order. Coordinate repairs and upgrades as needed to maintain efficiency.
- Data Management and Record keeping
- Utilize Dairy Comp 305 software to input, review, and analyze herd performance data. Track and maintain accurate records on herd health, reproduction, and production. Use data to identify trends and make informed management decisions.
- Health and Reproduction Management:
- Training and Development
- Develop and implement training programs for employees on best practices for milking, animal care, health management, and safety. Ensure employees have the skills and knowledge to excel in their roles.
Qualifications:
- Minimum of 4 years of dairy farm experience, with substantial experience managing a large-scale dairy operation of 1,000+ cows.
- Education: A DVM degree (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine) is preferred but not required. Candidates with equivalent experience in dairy management will also be considered.
- AI Breeding and Reproduction Expertise: Strong background in AI breeding and reproduction management, ensuring optimal herd genetics and performance.
- Herd Health Experience: Proven experience in managing herd health, including disease prevention, vaccination protocols, treatment plans, and overall wellness.
- Dairy Nutrition Knowledge: Strong understanding of dairy nutrition, with the ability to work collaboratively with nutritionists to implement effective feeding strategies.
- Technology Proficiency: Experience with Dairy Comp 305 or similar herd management software. Ability to manage and analyze data to make informed decisions about herd performance.
- Leadership Skills: Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills. Proven ability to manage, train, and motivate a team effectively.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to work in a physically demanding environment and perform hands-on tasks when needed.
- Problem-Solving and Decision-Making: Strong analytical skills, with the ability to identify issues, propose solutions, and make timely decisions that optimize farm operations.
