Job Description: The professional duties of the Assistant Director of Student Services are outlined, but not limited to, the following job description.
Management of Staff:
- Hires, observes, supervises and evaluates special education staff designated by the Director of Student Services within the consistent and systematic approach embedded in the new teacher evaluation system.
- Oversee caseload assignments, schedules, and building-based due process compliance.
- Provides training and professional development opportunities for general education and special education staff (school and district level staff, PLC groups) in areas such as: federal and state regulations,District procedures, disability awareness, interdepartmental agencies, IEP development, etc.
Management of Programs/District Procedures:
- Assists with the implementation of the long-range and short-range plans for achieving special education goals and objectives in alignment with the district's strategic plan.
- Oversees the ongoing budget costs and projected costs relative to the out-of-district programs throughout the school year and prepares related reports for the School Committee and Finance Committee.
- Monitors referrals to out-of-district placements, and when appropriate, helps to develop in-district specialized programming and assists the Director of Student Services in building capacity within the schools to support students so that they may remain within district and/or to return from out-of-district programs.
- Assists the Director of Student Services in coordinating the special education services for all students with disabilities and ensures that students have access to the Massachusetts State Curriculum Frameworks.
- Works with the Director of Student Services to ensure consistency, cohesion, and coordination of practices across the District.
- Attends all regularly scheduled meetings with the Student Services Administrative Team as convened by the Director of Student Services.
- Assists with the planning and preparation of ESE (Elementary and Secondary) indicators and reviews by implementing and supporting the procedures as outlined in the policy and procedure manual.
- Assists in overseeing the ESY (Extended School Year) programming during the summer.
- Assist in the preparation of the special education budget for the subsequent fiscal year.
- Other duties as designated by the Director of Student Services.
- Manages complex and challenging cases, as designated by the Director of Student Services, by maintaining effective and professional contact with parents, staff, advocates and outside evaluators.
- Manages special education processes by facilitating and chairing Eligibility Evaluation team meetings
- Reviews IEPs, evaluation reports, and related IEP paperwork for accuracy and completion within the mandated timelines
- Ensures a systematic and consistent approach to the development of IEPs (Individual Education Plans) are written to meet federal and state standards and student needs.

Job Requirements
- Valid Massachusetts Educator License as a Special Education Administrator - All Levels
- Minimum of 5 (five) years of successful experience within Special Education and/or Student Services
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to facilitate teams; ability to work well with administration, teachers, students and parents.
- Strong organizational and technology skills preferred.
- Work schedule includes nights, weekends, and holidays as necessary.
- At least 5 year(s) of relevant experience preferred.
- Master degree preferred.
