JOB SUMMARY:
Assist the Director of Nursing in planning, organizing, staffing directing, coordinating, reporting, budgeting, and management of the nursing department as assigned by the Director of Nursing. Assists in providing meaningful services to render the optimum level of resident care.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:
- Develops and maintains in conjunction with and under the director of the Director of Nursing, nursing service objectives, standards of nursing practice, and the nursing policies and procedures manual, with the help of the Administrator, to provide the most appropriate and comprehensive care to each resident.
- Assist the Director of Nursing to recruit and maintain nursing department staff and to interview prospective personnel.
- Prepare nursing schedule and daily sheets for all shifts, coordinates with Nursing Supervisor regarding staffing to reduce and eliminate overtime while maintaining appropriate staffing for level of care needed.
- Participates in the development and implementation of resident care policies.
- Responsible in planning and carrying out programs for orientation and training of employees.
- Responsible in assisting Human Resource Department in checking/completing employees Physicals, Mantoux test, and immunizations required by the state as ordered by the Medical Doctor.
- Assists the Director of Nursing to assure than nursing personnel provide treatments, medications, diets, rehabilitative nursing care, activities of daily living, protective service, and training in self care as stated in the Care Plan to ascertain that optimum comfort and care is provided.
- Assist the Director of Nursing in interviewing and selecting residents for admission.
- Assist in scheduling conferences with the resident and family when necessary to interpret policy and identify problems and concerns pertaining to nursing services.
- Participates in discharge planning, developing, and implementing Resident Care Plans, Nursing Assessments, etc., to meet the total needs of the residents.
- Encourages residents and their family members to participate in developing care plans for meeting the medical and nursing needs of the resident.
- Assures that a stock level of medications, medical supplies, equipment, etc. maintained on premises at all times. Report needs to the Director of Nursing.
- Maintains the care and use of supplies, equipment, etc., and maintains the appearance of nursing areas, and inspects regularly nursing units for sanitation order, and safety.
- Assists the Director of Nursing and the Pharmaceutical Service Committee in developing, maintaining, and implementing written polices and procedures for the administration, storage, and control of medications and supplies.
- Assists the Director of Nursing in maintaining a reference library of written nursing materials (i.e., PDR’s. Federal Regulations, Policy and Procedure Manuals, etc.) that will provide assistance in meeting the needs of the residents. Secures new materials available. Is in charge of nursing and inservice schedule.
- Assist the Director of Nursing in developing and maintaining a procedure for assuring that professional and current licenses as required by the State and that such licenses and renewal numbers are kept on file.
- Reviews nurses’ notes to assure that they are informative and descriptive of the nursing care provided and of the resident’s response to the care. Reports problem areas to the Director of Nursing.
- Audits Medicare and monthly charting.
- Follows up Dietary and Pharmacy requisition.
- Makes rounds with attending physicians and/or Medical Director as requested or as may be necessary.
- Follow up the attending physicians to record and sign progress notes, physicians’ orders, treatment plans, Care Plans, etc.
- Makes rounds to assure that nursing service personnel are performing appropriate nursing care to meet the needs of the residents. Reports problem areas to the Director of Nursing. Provides nursing care as may be required.
- Creates and maintains an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the department.
- Assists to develop, maintain and implement infection control policies and all personnel follow procedures to assure that a sanitary environment is maintained at all times using aseptic and isolation techniques. Report problem areas to the Director of Nursing.

- Cooperates with the facility’s consultants and implements recommended changes as approved by the Director of Nursing.
- Makes written and oral reports/ recommendations to the Director of Nursing as necessary/ required, concerning the operation of the Nursing Department.
- Assumes the responsibility for maintaining professional competence through participation in programs of continuing education (i.e., nursing seminars, training programs, etc.).
- Communicates with the medical staff, nursing personnel, and other department supervisors.
- Work beyond normal working hours, and in other positions temporarily when necessary.
- Attends and participates in continuing educational programs designed to keep abreast of changes in the nursing profession.
- Maintains a role as liaison to the residents, their families, support departments, etc., to adequately plan for the residents’ needs.
- Performs other related duties that may become necessary in meeting the nursing needs of the residents.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must be a graduate of an accredited school of nursing and hold a current Registered Professional Nurse in the State of Illinois.
- Must have working knowledge of nursing services, nursing administration rehabilitation, general nursing and geriatric nursing.
