The Assistant Dean for the Center for Education in the Susanne M. Glasscock School of Continuing Studies is responsible for developing and implementing programs that enhance the purposes of both the University and Glasscock School of Continuing Studies (GSCS) and reports directly to the Dean.
This position takes a leading role in the development of ideas and concepts that further support the strategic goal of the University's PreK-12 educational outreach programs and mission. The Assistant Dean provides leadership and strategy for the Center for Education, including managing all Center for Education PreK-12 program personnel and directing the creation of new programs or enhancement of existing offerings related to the Center for College Readiness (CCR), School literacy and Culture (SLC), Summer Pre-College, and Education department programs. The incumbent will oversee the campus wide integration and the comprehensive branding of the University PreK-12 programs. The Assistant Dean will teach, as needed, across the Center for Education portfolio. Additionally, the position will serve as one of the primary Rice representatives for external PreK-12 partners as well as the co-lead GSCS contact person for potential funding opportunities.
The Glasscock School of Continuing Studies is seeking a visionary Assistant Dean with a proven record of excellence in PreK-12 education, scholarship, strategic planning, and leadership.
Salary
Starting at $91,290 and Up, Depending on Experience and Qualifications
Essential Functions
- Directs staff and provides leadership to achieve goals and vision of the organization
- Responsible for hiring and retaining staff, career coaching, professional development and accountable for the performance of direct reports
- May independently or in collaboration with human resources managers, guide supervisors in the interpretation and implementation of human resources policies, procedures and programs
- Develops and directs strategic plans for organization or program(s) managed
- May develop multi-year business plans
- Identifies and resolves strategic issues of substantial significance that affect the overall functioning beyond the immediate unit, consult and advise senior leadership
- Makes decisions that establish objectives for the overall direction or operation of a significant organization
- Oversees allocation of all resources
- Evaluates the effectiveness of the organizational structure and programs to ensure success, development of employees and appropriate use of staff resources
- Responsible for the financial viability and success of the organization, including long term planning
- Advises senior management on programmatic and policy development
- May provide input to university leadership on institutional administrative policies and guidelines
- Performs all other duties as assigned
Additional Functions / Information
- Provides strategic leadership of key functional areas within the school, this may include program administration, new program development, fundraising, research and educational initiatives, outreach and administrative operations
- Represents the dean's office on school and university committees and in administering all aspects of program and degree policies and procedures
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent
- Eight years of related experience
- Demonstrated leadership, supervisory, planning and change management skills
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Able to influence people, solve problems, troubleshoot, think creatively and resolve conflicts
- Advanced financial expertise in budget planning and financial forecasting
- Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong knowledge of industry standards and/or regulatory requirements
- Subject matter expertise for area(s) of responsibility
Preferred Qualifications
- PhD or EdD in related field
Experience:
- Ten years of experience in Education administration
- Two years of experience working for or with Foundations
- Three years of PreK-12 teaching experience in public schools
- Experience in PreK-12 School Leadership (e.g. Principal, Superintendent, etc.)
- Experience as grant Principal Investigator
- Demonstrated experience with the Texas Education Agency (TEA) or other state educational agencies
- Demonstrated record of Education research and publications
