The most important criteria for this role is a someone that possesses a strong ability to lead people, help them grow, inspire and engage! You'll have oversight of a 30 person accounting department and support other managers to develop their people. You'll need to be a strong technical accountant with the ability to work with large sets of data. Ideally someone that started their career in public accounting and has gone on to lead large accounting teams!
We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Assistant Controller to join our high-performing finance team. The Assistant Controller will play a crucial role in the finance department and will be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the finance team, including the monthly and annual financial reporting, income statement preparation, annual budget planning, year-end close process, and reconciliations. This role will also require in-depth knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) certification is highly preferred. The ideal candidate should have a minimum of 7-10+ years of leadership experience in a similar role.
Responsibilities:
1. Oversee and manage the general accounting functions, including, but not limited to: accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and taxes.
2. Assist with the preparation of monthly, quarterly and annual financial reports.
3. Develop and maintain timely and accurate financial statements and reports in accordance with GAAP.
4. Assist in the development of the annual budget and forecasts, and manage the implementation of the budget.
5. Coordinate the year-end close process, ensuring all financial reporting deadlines are met.
6. Monitor and analyze department work to develop more efficient procedures and use of resources while maintaining a high level of accuracy.
7. Lead and guide the finance team, fostering a workplace environment that is conducive to growth, innovation, and high productivity.
8. Review all month-end closing activities including general ledger accounts, balance sheet accounts, and overhead cost allocation.
9. Enhance and implement financial and accounting systems, processes, tools, and control systems.
10. Serve as a key point of contact for external auditors; Manage preparation and support of all external audits.
11. Leverage Visio to create process flow diagrams to enhance financial procedures.
Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. Advanced degree or professional accounting certification (e.g., CPA) is required.
2. 5+ years of leadership experience in a financial management role, with a preference for experience in a non-profit setting.
3. Strong knowledge of finance, accounting, budgeting, and cost control principles including GAAP.
4. Demonstrated experience with financial reporting, income statement preparation, and budget planning.
5. Proven experience with year-end close processes and monthly reporting.
6. Proficient in accounting software, MS Excel, and Visio.
7. Excellent leadership and team management skills, with a commitment to developing team members.
8. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
9. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
10. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage well through ambiguity and complexity.
11. Ability to exercise sound judgment and make decisions based on accurate and timely analyses.
12. High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results-orientation.
