Assistant Controller - Downeast

Position Overview:

Downeast is seeking an Assistant Controller to lead the monthly and annual financial close and reporting functions working in close collaboration with the Controller. The role includes but is not limited to period close preparation, scheduling, deliverables, as well as assisting in implementation of new accounting standards, maintaining technical memos, managing internal controls over financial reporting, external financial audits, and recommending process changes to improve internal reporting. This position is a full-time, benefited, exempt-level, with a direct reporting relationship to the organization's Financial Controller.

You will be results-oriented with excellent communication and technical accounting skills, and leverage leadership, strong interpersonal skills, and effective management style to successfully manage your team. You should have strong presentation skills as to present complex topics both strategically and in everyday language.

Responsibilities:

• Participate in month end close, and assist in preparing and distributing financial reports as part of the monthly and annual close processes
• Assist with general ledger account reconciliations
• Perform ongoing assessments of accounting processes to improve performance
• Update and maintain policies and procedural documentation for GL accounts
• Confirm entries, transactions, and accounts are accurately and properly reflected in the financial statements to ensure integrity of the data and financial reports
• Contribute to technical accounting research projects and help compile process narratives to ensure accurate reporting
• Establish and maintain solid working relationships with other departments to ensure that accounting records are complete and accurate
• Identify risk areas and present recommendations of changes in the reporting process to adapt to changes in reporting requirements
• Lead, mentor, and develop a team of accounting professionals
• Ensure team members remain motivated, challenged through learning opportunities, and guided in their professional development with an effective coaching relationship
• Undertake and manage special projects and other reporting needs as required
• Continue to evolve and develop an accounting infrastructure that will support significant growth and effectively scale with increased complexity

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree or higher in Accounting
• CPA license in the State of Utah
• Minimum 5+ years relevant public accounting experience with leadership experience, or 5+ years industry and financial reporting experience
• Strong analytical skills
• Advanced user of Microsoft Excel and Office Suite
• Experience in consumer good industry
• Advanced user of Microsoft Dynamics NAV and/or SAP experience

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in retail
• Experience with Jet Reports
• Experience with Storis POS

What else should I know?

The Assistant Controller role is based in our Holladay headquarters near the ski resorts and mountain trails of Salt Lake City, UT. It reports directly to our Controller and will work with our accounting staff, business partners and the executive team. This position will be onsite.
