POSITION: ASSISTANT CONTROLLER
COMANCO has an excellent opportunity for an Assistant Controller. Our construction management team is looking for an energetic Assistant Controller: someone who wants to work for an established and successful nation-wide construction management company, going above and beyond in their position to help COMANCO meet its business goals.
Job Focus:
- Protect assets by establishing, monitoring, and enforcing internal controls.
- Monitor and confirm financial condition by conducting audits; providing information to external auditors.
- Achieve budget objectives by scheduling expenditures; analyzing variances; initiating corrective actions.
- Back up all accounting positions.
- Comply with federal, state, and local legal requirements by studying existing and new legislation; anticipating future legislation; enforcing adherence to requirements; filing financial reports; advising management on needed actions.
- Maintain financial staff by recruiting, selecting, orienting, and training employees; coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; planning, monitoring, and appraising job results.
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
General Ledger:
- Maintain the Chart of Accounts for all companies.
- Prepare and Review monthly financial package.
- Ensure all balance sheet accounts are reconciled monthly and resolve any errors or misstatements in the balance sheet promptly.
- Ad Hoc requests that may come up in the normal course of business.
Accounts Payable:
- Manage all Accounts Payable processes & procedures.
- Perform regular audits of the accounts payable process.
- Be a contact for COMDATA, handling calls and employee inquiries regarding corporate cards. Ensure employees are complying with the corporate policies and procedures related to the use and reporting of corporate credit cards.
Sales & Use Tax:
- Ensure tax is collected on all taxable sales.
- Oversee and maintain Sales and Use tax rates in the Spectrum system.
- Manage the preparation of all sales & use, gross receipts, and excise tax returns.
- Ensure sales/use tax is complete and paid accurately at the correct rate(s).
- Analyze tax information and educate employees on how to best structure purchases that are within the parameters of the law.
- Respond in a timely manner to all inquiries from taxing authorities.
Accounts Receivable:
- Work with the project management team to resolve billing/draw request issues.
Job Cost:
- Review job cost reports for accuracy.
- Record earned revenue and over/under billings on a monthly basis.
- Perform final review of the overhead allocation process.
- Maintain job phase files as needed.
- Back up the Staff Accountant with new project and change request set-up.
Payroll:
- Process payroll transfer weekly from Operating to Payroll.
- Oversee payroll ensuring all payroll related liabilities are paid accurately and timely.
- Ensure accruals for benefit related expenses are accurate and adjust as needed.
- Work with the Payroll Administrator to resolve issues that arise with payroll.
- Back up the Payroll Administrator.
Taxes:
- Assist the Controller with maintaining the schedule of Estimated Taxes for Federal Estimated Taxes and Florida Estimated Taxes.
- Respond in a timely manner to all inquiries from taxing authorities.
Cash Management:
- Upload positive pay files and resolve positive pay inquiries with the bank.
Audit:
- Assist in the Year-End audit
- Manage and perform the 401 (k) audit.
- Assist with the preparation of federal and state tax reports.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor's Degree or higher in accounting or finance.
- Experience: Minimum five years accounting experience, preferably in the construction industry.
- Skills: Proven ability to maintain accounting processes, properly record financial transactions and prepare financial and management reports in a computerized environment. Ability to communicate effectively and positively with employees, vendors and customers.
