We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Assistant Controller with a strong background in the construction or real estate industry to join our growing team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of the company’s accounting functions, ensuring accurate financial reporting, and maintaining compliance with industry standards and regulations. This is a key leadership position that requires a deep understanding of the unique financial needs of construction or real estate companies.
Key Responsibilities:
Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger functions.
Manage the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with accounting principles (GAAP).
Monitor cash flow and ensure proper financial controls are in place to manage project-based budgets and timelines.
Lead and supervise a team of accounting professionals, providing training, mentorship, and performance reviews.
Work closely with project managers, contractors, and senior leadership to ensure accurate financial reporting on construction or real estate projects.
Review and reconcile project costs, ensuring that job costs are properly allocated to the correct accounts and projects.
Manage construction or real estate-related financial reporting, including contract revenue recognition, billings, and progress payments.
Support the budgeting and forecasting processes, providing insights into financial performance and recommending improvements.
Oversee the preparation and submission of tax filings, including sales tax, payroll tax, and property tax returns, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
Maintain and update financial policies, procedures, and internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure accuracy in financial reporting.
Work with external auditors to facilitate the annual audit process and respond to auditor requests for documentation and information.
Stay up-to-date with changes in industry regulations, tax laws, and accounting standards as they pertain to the construction or real estate sectors.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (required).
CPA or CMA designation preferred.
Minimum of 5 years of accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a managerial or supervisory role.
Proven experience in the construction or real estate industry, with a strong understanding of job costing, revenue recognition, and project accounting.
Advanced proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Sage, Viewpoint, Procore) and Microsoft Excel.
In-depth knowledge of GAAP, tax regulations, and financial reporting requirements specific to the construction or real estate industry.
Strong leadership and team management skills with the ability to train, mentor, and motivate accounting staff.
Exceptional organizational and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to interact effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders.
Strong attention to detail and accuracy in financial reporting and analysis.
Preferred Skills and Experience:
Experience with construction project management software (e.g., Procore, Buildertrend) and ERP systems.
Familiarity with commercial real estate transactions and lease accounting.
Experience in tax planning and compliance specific to construction or real estate entities.
