Job Description
Purpose of Position:
Under direction of the Director, Department of Nursing, or designee, participates in planning, organizing, directing, coordinating and evaluating the nursing service and nursing education program of a hospital, hospital center or diagnostic and treatment center. Performs related work.
Examples of Typical Tasks:
- Performs all duties of the Director of Nursing in his or her absence.
- Participates in developing philosophy, objectives, policies and standards of nursing service and education.
- Assumes responsibility for developing and implementing a staffing plan and directing recruitment and selection of personnel.
- Develops, plans, coordinates, directs and evaluates assigned projects and programs.
- Assists the Director in preparation of personnel, supply and equipment budgets for nursing.
- Assumes responsibility for planning, directing, organizing and evaluating programs of orientation, training and continuing education for nursing personnel.
- Assumes responsibility for directing the evaluation of personnel performance.
- Participates in developing and maintaining sound relationships with community, labor and professional groups in developing new nursing programs and policies.
- Assumes responsibility of day-to-day operations of nursing service.
- Assesses nursing services by making rounds, conducting chart review and evaluating patient care.
- Participates in a system of continuing evaluation of nursing service. \
Minimum Qualifications
- 1. Licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State, plus (2) or (3) below.
- 2. A Masters Degree in Nursing Administration, Education or an equivalent field and a minimum of six years of satisfactory nursing experience, of which four years shall have been in a supervisory, teaching or administrative capacity; or,
- 3. A Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing and seven years of satisfactory nursing experience, five years of which shall have been in a supervisory or teaching capacity; or,
- 4. A satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience. However, all candidates must be licensed and currently registered to practice as a Professional Nurse in New York State
