Main Objective: Provides legal advice and counsel for labor and employment law matters. Responsible for protecting the organization's legal interests and maintaining its operations within the scope established by law.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide business oriented and accurate legal advice and counsel for all labor and employment law matters; draft, edit, negotiate, review and interpret related legal documents accordingly.
- Identify and analyze legal issues, draft key documents, present clear recommendations, and assure legal compliance; develop strategies to reduce potential areas of risk.
- Anticipate and mitigate legal risks generally with focus on labor and employment matters.
- Research, analyze, advise and present on global labor and employment issues with diligence.
- Communicate legal ideas, research and strategies at the highest level both in writing and verbally.
- Draft and advise on labor, employment, and other HR-related workplace policies and procedures.
- Conduct and assist with employment-related investigations as needed.
- Possess a top-tier working knowledge of labor and employment laws generally, both federal and state, including administrative rules, regulations and policies.
- Able to research, understand and advise on international employment laws and regulations as needed.
- Manage and participate in all aspects of labor and employment litigation matters, including working with outside counsel, discovery and litigation support entities, internal legal resources and company stakeholders. Ability to be present in court, at depositions, at hearings or other venues as deemed necessary and appropriate.
- Work as a team member with other professionals and staff in the Legal Department and the Company more broadly. Perform tasks in any area of law or office duties as directed by supervisors.
- Up to 15% travel may be required.
Education and Experience:
- Must be a graduate of an accredited law school with at least 5 years’ experience as an attorney practicing labor and employment law, with at least 3 of those years practicing in a law firm.
- Must be admitted into and a member in good standing of a state bar.
- Management-side employment practice experience is preferred.
- Experience in the medical device, pharmaceutical, or life sciences industry is preferred.
- Experience working in multiple state jurisdictions and internationally is preferred.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements/Specialized Courses and/or Training:
Advanced writing, comprehensive reading, communication and legal research skills required.
Electronic based legal research experience required.
As an international and multi-state employer, the ideal candidate will have experience in matters involving employee immigration and global mobility, as well as be familiar with state-specific legal requirements, including those in California and Colorado.
Machine, Tools, and/or Equipment Skills:
LEXIS/Westlaw, Excel, MS Office, PC, printer, copiers and other miscellaneous office equipment.
Reasoning Ability:
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
