W.W. Norton & Company is seeking an Art Rights Manager for their award-winning Trade Art Department. The Art Rights Manager will be responsible for all tasks related to clearing photo permissions with stock houses, working directly with artists and photographers on licensing existing work, collaborating with art directors on commissioning custom art, conducting image research for selected covers, as well as commissioning and managing a roster of freelance photo-researchers. The Art Rights Manager will work in closely with our legal and contracts departments to ensure all contracts are executed properly. This position will report to the Associate Design Director of the Trade department.
Essential Job Responsibilities Include:
- Clear art permissions for jackets and covers for all Norton imprints: Norton, Liveright, Countryman Press, Young Readers, and Professional Books.
- Research photos, artwork, stock imagery for covers and jackets across imprints as needed
- Research and facilitate the hire of cover illustrators as needed
- Assign and hire photo researchers for jackets/covers, and investigate photos, artwork, and other imagery provided by Editorial or Authors.
- Work with departments across the company including Subsidiary Rights andPublicity, Marketing, Production and others on re-use of cover images
- Negotiate fees for artwork,
- Confer with Legal and Contracts departments on complex rights and permissions situations and and contract terms,
- Ensure accuracy of all art credits to be printed on jackets and covers
- Log and track completed purchase order agreements.

- Employment eligibility to work with W. W. Norton & Company in the U.S.
- This role is remote, but includes responsibilities that require in-office participation, so the ability to commute (when needed) to our 500 Fifth Avenue office is required. Hot desk space is available at all times.
- 2-5 years of experience in art rights management.
- Understanding of the common practices surrounding art rights negotiating, fees, copyright, etc…
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Excellent negotiating skills.
- Must have a passion for visual art and staying up to date on emerging artists and photographers.
- Passion and appreciation for a wide range of books across all categories of publishing, including fiction, non-fiction, history, and poetry.
- Excellent organization and task tracking skills.
- Good sense of schedules and timelines.
- Inspired to think independently and creatively.
Technical Skills
- Proficient in Microsoft suite is required.
- Proficient in Adobe Bridge and the creative suite is a plus, but not essential.
Currently available benefits*:
- Annual compensation for this position is between $60,000-70,000. All salaries and salary ranges posted by Norton may vary depending on experience, skills, location and like considerations. Generous paid time off, paid holidays, and summer Friday afternoons beginning in July
