ANIMAL SHELTER TECHNICIAN
Part-time Regular 20-29.75 hrs. per week
Animal Shelter Technicians are primarily tasked with feeding, watering, cleaning, and providing enrichment to animals (primarily dogs) who are brought to the shelter by Tooele City Police and Animal Control Officers because they were unable to reunite them with their owners in the field (for example no tag or chip) or the animal is alleged to be dangerous and is needing to be held while the due process proceedings take place. Initial intake may include basic general welfare evaluation and coordination with supervisor to determine if veterinary care is need for the animal's well being.
Shelter Technicians will also schedule appointments with the public, assist with reuniting owners with their animals, and assist with adoptions.
Other tasks include answering phones or returning phone calls, processing forms, answering routine questions about shelter services, filing, and basic data input.
This is a physically demanding job with routine lifting of 10-25 lbs. and occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs. Reaching, grabbing, bending, pulling, and working with unpredictable animals and jerking motions occurs daily. Cleaning animal feces, urine, and other animal fluids is an essential function of this position. The shelter is loud due to multiple barking dogs in a confined area. Appropriate PPE is provided.
Prior to applying, applicants are encouraged to carefully evaluate the working environment and emotional aspect associated with this job. Shelter staff may perform unpleasant tasks that are needed to test living and deceased animals for various diseases. While generally only conducted for humane purposes or if the animal is deemed dangerous, shelter technicians may euthanize animals based on policy guidelines. They will also care for deceased animals. Interaction with the public may include stressful and emotional encounters. Tooele City's Animal Shelter is located on the northwest border of the City and is accessible through Erda City roads.
Must be at least 18 years old. Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
