JOB SUMMARY
Civilian position in the police department who performs a variety of animal control, shelter care, and job-related city code enforcement. The Animal Care/Shelter Attendant is responsible for assisting the Animal Control Supervisor. The responsibilities will vary based on the current needs of the shelter.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Feed and water animals daily.
- Ensures all areas of the shelter are cleaned and disinfected daily by following established disease control procedures.
- Immediately report any animal health or behavior abnormalities to supervisor.
- Ability to work well with others.
- Completes all required paperwork and reports.
- Wash bedding, towels, and other equipment as needed.
- Ensure cleaning areas with supplies and equipment are restocked.
- Ensure work areas remain in an organized manner.
- Respond to requests for service or assistance.
- Investigates reports or complaints of animals and takes appropriate action.
- Attends meetings and responds to related questions and complaints; provide public education regarding animal control.
- Practices positive interaction and communications.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Basic knowledge and skills with animals and animal behavior.
Licenses or Certifications:
- Must possess valid driver’s license.
Special Requirements:
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must have no felony convictions in Arizona or conviction in any other state which would be a felony in Arizona.
- Must not have engaged in conduct or a pattern of conduct that would jeopardize public trust and be of good moral character.
- Must successfully pass a background check as determined by the agency.
- Must be able to work any hours, including weekends and holidays.
- Must be able to travel on a limited basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Knowledge of City, County, and State laws governing, animal control enforcement.
- Knowledge of procedures and techniques for dealing with the public in a tactful but firm manner
- Skill in using computers
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written directions in an independent manner
- Ability to clean and maintain an animal shelter
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely
- Ability to prepare written reports and maintain efficient record keeping systems
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Ability to work with various types of animals
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must exert up to 100 pounds of force occasionally.The following physical abilities are required: balancing, crawling, crouching, handling, listening, kneeling, lifting, pulling, talking, seeing, and walking.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position requires the employee to work both indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
