Job Description:
The AI Specialist – Student Services will play a key role in transforming how students and staff experience and benefit from artificial intelligence within The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Focused initially on The College’s student success and academic advising efforts, this role leverages cutting-edge AI tools—like natural language processing and prompt engineering—to streamline processes and elevate overall levels of student success. Over time, responsibilities may expand to include broader student services, staff initiatives, and operational improvements, offering exciting opportunities for growth and impact.
Success in this role requires innovative problem-solving, disciplined analytical skills, and the ability to create practical AI solutions for diverse audiences. Your efforts will contribute to improved student satisfaction, retention and graduation rates, and operational excellence, aligning with ASU’s mission and supporting The College’s vision.
Salary Range: $78,000 - $102,000; Depends on experience
Essential Duties:
- Lead the design and implementation of AI-driven tools (e.g., chatbots and virtual assistants) to revolutionize advising processes, operational efficiency, and other student success efforts.
- Develop and refine AI systems by crafting and testing precise prompts that ensure tools deliver accurate, contextually relevant responses aligned with institutional values.
- Leverage student data insights to optimize AI models that support academic planning and elevate student success initiatives.
- Collaborate with teams within The College and across the university (e.g., The College leadership, IT and Student Services teams, and Enterprise Technology AI and Experience Center teams, among others) to align priorities and ensure the efficient use of shared resources and institutional knowledge.
- Build and foster cross-functional relationships with advising staff, student services, technical teams, and other stakeholders to identify challenges and craft innovative AI solutions tailored to their needs.
- Empower staff by providing training on AI tools and prompt refinement, fostering broader understanding and adoption.
- Expand AI’s reach across student services, identifying opportunities to implement accessible and inclusive solutions that address diverse needs.
- Champion ethical AI practices and uphold institutional standards for data privacy, accessibility, and responsible use in all projects.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Expertise in higher education systems, particularly student advising, operational processes, and best practices in student success efforts.
- Skills in prompt engineering and natural language processing for tools like ChatGPT or similar platforms.
- Exceptional problem-solving abilities, with expertise in optimizing AI workflows to address complex challenges.
- Proficiency in user research and translating insights into actionable AI-driven solutions.
- Exceptional communication skills, facilitating collaboration with technical and non-technical stakeholders alike (e.g., student services, technology, data analytics and cybersecurity).
- Knowledge of enterprise systems such as Salesforce or PeopleSoft, with experience integrating AI solutions into broader technical ecosystems.
- Creativity and resourcefulness in applying AI to diverse challenges, coupled with a commitment to ethical practices.
Desired Qualifications:
- Proven experience in developing and refining AI-driven tools, especially in education or student services contexts.
- Familiarity with advising frameworks and best practices in student engagement.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze AI outputs and improve relevance, accuracy, and effectiveness.
- Experience training or mentoring others in the use of AI tools.
- Strong project management skills with a record of success in interdisciplinary environments.
- Demonstrated passion for staying current with AI advancements, including generative AI, large language models, and natural language processing, to drive innovation and enhance outcomes.
Working Environment:
- Activities are primarily performed in a regular, climate-controlled office setting, with extended periods of sitting or standing.
- Daily use of a desktop or laptop computer is required.
- Ability to clearly communicate and perform essential duties in both in-person and virtual settings.
- Regular evaluation of task outcomes and opportunities for process improvement.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree and seven (7) years of experience appropriate to the area of assignment/field; OR, Any equivalent combination of experience and/or training from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.
