•Garde aerospace engineer’s primary role is to conceptualize, design, develop, manufacture and test deployable space objects and to advance the state-of-the-art via internal and contract Research and Development Programs. Key Responsibilities: Design • Uses SolidWorks to design components and sub-assemblies of lightweight, advanced deployables for spacecraft; • Uses handbooks for initial mechanical and structural analysis to size components prior to handing over the design to Analysis for a complete finite element model; • Works with suppliers to select the appropriate COTS or custom fabricated component to meet design engineering needs; • Knows, understand and interprets industry and customer M&P specifications to support design compliances; • Works with other disciplines internally or externally (supplier and customer) to ensure that thermal, electrical and system requirements are met; • May act as Cognizant Engineer (CogE) from cradle-to-grave for a given design; Assembly & Acceptance Test • Works safety with mechanical tools, chemical cleaning solutions and bonding adhesives; • Supervises or inspects bonding operations of light weight composite polymers and thin films to ensure compliance to engineering requirements; • May supervise or trouble-shoot assembles of electro-mechanical products in a clean-room environment or test laboratory; • May supervise or trouble-shoot assemblies of electronic components including surface mount soldering of fine wires and parts under a microscope; • May supervise or trouble-shoot routine test equipment for development, qualification or acceptance testing; • Diagnostics and Root Cause – Corrective Action (RCCA) • Trouble-shoots manufacturing errors for lightweight deployable structures, electro-mechanical assemblies or components; • Suggests continuous improvement ideas for drawings, procedures, work instructions, shop orders and lab work requests; • Provides advice on preventative and corrective actions to Engineering and Quality; Technical Documentation • May review receiving or in process inspection including verifications of certificates of conformance and test records from suppliers alongside Quality Engineers or Inspectors; • Ensures accurate completion of shop orders, work instructions, product test and inspection records; • May write Manufacturing Work Instructions or Shop Orders based on experience and skill level; • Must understand aerospace drawings and lab work requests (LWRs) including competency in the interpretation of technical requirements such as geometric dimensioning & tolerance (GD&T) standards; • Works with Engineers, Lab Technicians and Suppliers’ Reps to update drawings and procedures that govern the manufacturing process; Development & Qualification Testing • Write Test Plans and Procedures to govern in-process, acceptance and qualification testing of prototype and flight hardware; • Defines the development and fabrication of unique test set-ups to meet engineering requirements; • Leads the planning, execution and interpretation of designed experiments (DoE) to identify and characterize critical process factors; • Analyses and post-processes test data to meet engineering requirements; • Assists with the installation and validation of process and test equipment; Team Work & Communication • Communicates with technicians, quality and the program office on product performance and functionality issues; • Contributes to the development of work instructions, batch records, equipment logs; • Provides technical support to customers on telecons and during design reviews and technical interchange meetings; • Drives and supports engineering-related action item closure; Safety • Follows all safety guidelines and reports unsafe conditions to a supervisor; • Follows 5S principals to maintain a clean, safe, organized and productive work area. Who You Are: • Bachelor’s of Science in Engineering required. A Master’s degree is a preferred, but not required. • Minimum of five (5) years in the aerospace engineering industry (not academia) or a related area with exposure to a variety of disciplines including mechanical design, development and testing. • Minimum of five (5) years SolidWorks CAD experience required • Familiar with a variety of the field's concepts, practices, and procedures • Experience with Structural (Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and similar) & Thermal Analysis, CFD, Systems Engineering (CAMEO, DOORS, Requirements Verification and Validation), Matlab, Labview, mechatronics preferred. • U.S. Security Clearance required with ability to obtain Top Secret Clearance. • Has experience leading and directing the work of others. • A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail. • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills. • Ability to multitask and manage shifting priorities in a fast-paced environment. • A proactive and problem-solving mindset.
