About the Job
Reports to the Fitness Promotions Manager. Under the guidance of the Group Exercise Coordinator, is responsible for conducting quality group exercise classes.

Conducts group exercise classes by:
- Arriving early and staying after classes to answer any questions.
- Selecting safe, effective and appropriate exercises; analyzing clients exercises and offering modifications as necessary.
- Following the scheduled class format and maintaining the proper intensity level.
- Selecting appropriate music speed and type.
- Cueing movements and patterns so that the client can successfully perform movements in a smooth and continuous manner.
- Demonstrating a genuine interest in, and dedication to, improving the health and fitness of clients.
- Changing class routine a minimum of every 4-6 weeks, unless following guidelines of a licensed program.
- Assisting with class coverage in all Beacon Health & Fitness locations.
Supports the BH&F management team by:
- Picking up the exercise area before and after class.
- Assisting the Group Exercise Coordinator in the development of new classes, in all B&HF locations.
- Being supportive of other instructors, clients and the BH&F staff in general.
- Remaining familiar with and supporting BH&F programs, special events, membership promotions and other events.
- Attending mandatory BH&F meetings and training sessions.
- Remaining knowledgeable of and abiding by Beacon Health & Fitness substitution policies; minimizing the use of substitutes.
- Receiving complaints, comments and/or suggestions from clients and promptly taking appropriate action.
Performs other functions to maintain personal competence and contribute to the overall effectiveness of the department by:
- Completing other job-related duties and projects as assigned.
Associate complies with the following organizational requirements:
- Attends and participates in department meetings and is accountable for all information shared.
- Completes mandatory education, annual competencies and department specific education within established timeframes.
- Completes annual employee health requirements within established timeframes.
- Maintains license/certification, registration in good standing throughout fiscal year.
- Direct patient care providers are required to maintain current BCLS (CPR) and other certifications as required by position/department.
- Consistently utilizes appropriate universal precautions, protective equipment, and ergonomic techniques to protect patient and self.
- Adheres to regulatory agency requirements, survey process and compliance.
- Complies with established organization and department policies.
- Available to work overtime in addition to working additional or other shifts and schedules when required.

Education and Experience
- The knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated below are normally acquired through the successful completion of a high school diploma or equivalent. Certification through the Aerobics and Fitness Association of America (AFAA) as a Group Exercise Instructor is required. Additional certification with the American Council on Exercise (ACE), or American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), or Aquatic Exercise Association (AEA), or United States Water Fitness Association (USWFA) or similar approved certification/training is required to teach specific aerobics classes.
Knowledge & Skills
- Requires the technical knowledge and application of basic exercise physiology and anatomy to adults and children if applicable.
- Requires knowledge of aerobic exercises for clients.
- Demonstrates the leadership, interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written) necessary to interact effectively with a diverse group of clients, staff, members and facility users in a professional, courteous, friendly and sincere manner.
- Requires CPR certification or arrangements to be certified within the first three months of employment as an aerobics instructor.
Working Conditions
- Works in an athletic club environment.
- May be exposed to frequent interruptions, the potential of increased noise levels and some discomfort due to cool or warm temperatures.
- Requires the ability to work flexible hours.
Physical Demands
- Requires the physical ability and stamina to perform the essential functions of the position.
