OVERVIEW:
Recreational therapists plan, direct, and coordinate recreation-based treatment programs. This position uses a variety of modalities, including arts and crafts; drama, music, and dance; sports and games;
aquatics; and community outings to help maintain or improve a patient’s physical, social, and emotional well-being.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee day-to-day activities of residents in the facility
- Initiate and promote activities within facility and stimulate patient interests and well-being
- Regulate programs in accordance with patient capabilities, needs, and interests.
- Transport residents to and from activity room as required
- Work with interdisciplinary team departments and staff members to promote the best possible care for the residents
- Provide supervision and leadership for other activity department staff meetings, contact relatives for patients requests and work with relatives concerning patients concerns and needs
- May conduct in-service training of other staff members, review their assessments and program goals, and consult with them on selected cases
- Prepare progress reports for medical staff reflecting patient reactions and evidence of progress or regression
- Maintain all activity related records required by regulations and Medical Records Department activity assessment, progress notes, and discharge summary
- Assess patients’ needs using observation, medical records, tests, and discussions with other healthcare professionals, patients’ families, and patients
- Develop treatment plans and programs that meet patients’ needs and interests
- Teach patients about ways to cope with stress, anxiety, or depression
- Assist in the Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) process
QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION / EXPERIENCE:
- Certification in Therapeutic Recreation or Certified Activities Director
- 4 or more years’ experience in a skilled nursing setting
- Must also have experience working with Dementia patients
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- This job operates in a health care setting. This role requires regular walking to various locations
- around the care center.
- Incumbent may be exposed to virus, disease and infection from patients and specimens in
- working environment.
- Incumbent may be required to work extended periods of time at a video display terminal.
- Incumbent may experience traumatic situations, including psychiatric, and deceased patients.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
- This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling and climbing all day.
- The employee must frequently lift or move objects and patients weighing over 50 pounds.
