Job Details
Responsibilities
Develop and maintain timely and accurate program financials and reports as required and in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and contract funders.
Ensure compliance with internal financial and accounting systems, policies, and procedures.
Ensure that all the organization's statutory requirements are met, including Charitable Status, Withholding Payments, Income Tax, Goods and Services Tax, and Employer Health Tax.
Assist CFO with the preparation of supporting information for the annual audit and Board's Finance committee and the external auditors reporting monthly or as necessary.
Maintain financial accounting systems for cash management, accounts payable, accounts receivable, credit control, and petty cash.
Supervise and train the Staff Accountant and finance department staff and oversee the staff accountant function including the posting and maintenance of the general ledger adjustments, accounts payable, and accounts receivable.
Ensure that assets are properly recorded, amortized, and disposed of appropriately. Assist with the financial reporting as required for Board and Finance Committee meetings.
Establish guidelines for Program budgets for Program Managers/Supervisors and the Senior Team to review and manage throughout the fiscal year. Proposed budget modifications to the CFO as necessary throughout the fiscal year for any program contract
Maintain and update financial records and information for each Funding Source. Prepare and submit grant invoices and required reports to funders. Provide accurate and timely reporting on the financial activity of individual grants and programs
Assess the need for new technology to meet the organization's financial data processing, control, and reporting requirements and liaise with Information Technology.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance. 5- 7 years of progressive financial responsibility and at least 5 years of supervisory experience. Certified Public Accountant or Certified Management Accountant designation is a plus. Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles. Knowledge of federal and provincial legislation affecting charities. Knowledge of Nonprofit Financial Management and budgeting with the DC Government contracts is required.
