ROLE WITH THE COMPANY:
Reporting to and partnering with the Director of Finance and Accounting, the Accounting Manager is the steward of the general ledger (and associated sub-ledgers) and engages in dynamic partnerships with business leaders to drive performance and deliver results. The Accounting Manager is responsible for maintaining a sound controls environment that complies with the Company’s internal accounting policies. This role is a critical part of leading and developing direct reports by managing performance, setting goals, and maintaining strong associate relationships.
Essential Functions: General
- Manage and oversee the daily operations of the accounting department.
- Manage accounting team of 2 including an Accountant and Accounting Associate
- Assist in maintaining the general ledger and sub-ledgers for multiple legal entities and business lines.
- Effectively communicate period changes in all financial statements for all required reporting.
- Proactively grow personal understanding of the Company’s systems and continuously improve and evolve processes.
- Manage external auditor engagement for annual audit requirements.
- Lead month-end and year-end accounting cycles, ensuring data integrity and maintenance of segregation of duties
- Evaluate and make appropriate improvements to internal accounting processes and procedures.
- Complete special projects as required to include all associated functions (standard general ledger accounting, research on accounting treatments, process development).
- Effective role player in the annual operations planning process.
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of ethical financial accounting and reporting procedures, including but not limited to GAAP and Sarbanes Oxley.
- Lead/Support all processes involving third-party managed properties from incorporation of financials to loan administration on debt financing and other special projects as required.
Real Estate Specific Activities:
- Assist in the budgeting of CAM, taxes, insurance and allocated salaries.
- Final Review of annual tenant letters to communicate rent and NNN expenses with Property Management team.
- Reconcile CAM, taxes and insurance annually and prepare communication to tenants with Property Management.
- Accountable for percentage rent calculations, including recording percentage rent in the tenant receivable and GL.
Candidate background:
- Bachelor’s in accounting required; CPA a plus or in process of becoming CPA, CPA required to move up
- 4+ years’ accounting experience in public accounting or public company with full cycle monthly accounting, including GL, GL reconciliations, overseeing AP and AR, with strong analytical ability
- Experience in accounting for multiple companies/lines of business preferred
- Real estate development experience and experience working for PE owned company a plus
- Knowledge of accounting systems and how they are integrated within a company’s accounting structures
- Knowledge of financial reporting processes and internal controls
- Results driven, doer and innovator, high energy, accept challenges with no idea how to do it and figure it out
- Understands how to develop relationships and who to get involved to get stuff done
- Strong Excel skills and experience with NetSuite, Sage, MRI, and Property Management software systems preferred
