Accounting Manager, Grants & Contracts
Washington, DC – Hybrid Schedule
Salary Range: $110,000 - $140,000 / year
My client is looking for an experienced Non-Profit professional to lead the Grants and Revenue Accounting function. Traditionally, this role has rolled under the Development side of the house, but with some changes, this position will have much more of an Accounting focus and will report to the company’s Controller. They will partner with leadership to lead change management within the company and help them to continue to grow.

My client works with federal, state and local governments and private funders to provide funding for the purchase and distribution of healthy food to communities throughout the DMV. In the coming years, they anticipate a significant increase in government and private support.
Under the general direction of the Controller, the Accounting Manager – Grants and Contracts will be responsible for overseeing all financial and reporting aspects of grants, including recognition, reconciliation, compliance, and budget management for private and government grants. This role requires strong financial acumen, excellent communication skills, and a passion for supporting our mission through effective grant management. This position will supervise a grants coordinator.

Essential Functions:
Grant Administration
- Manage the full lifecycle of grant funding, from assisting with proposal budget development to reporting and closeout, in coordination with regional, program and development team members.
- Monitor grant compliance requirements and ensure adherence to grant terms and conditions, including federal grant uniform guidance compliance requirements.
- Coordinate with development, regional and program staff to develop grant budgets and ensure alignment with program and grant objectives.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date grant records, including grant agreements, financial reports and supporting documentation.
- Reconcile grant revenue and expenditures on a regular basis, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
- Prepare and/or review transactions to record grant-related expense allocations and releases from restriction.
- Track grant expenditures and ensure proper allocation of funds according to grant budgets.
- Track spending and activities against grant/contract to ensure requirements are met within designated timeframe.
- Prepare financial reports for grant funders and internal stakeholders, highlighting grant performance and impact.
Strategic Development
- Develop, implement, and refine processes and procedures for contract and grant administration in compliance with strategic objectives of regional teams, political and policy considerations, funder requirements and organizational policies.
- Facilitate effective implementation of contract and grant responsibilities within program objectives and requirements.
- Set goals that align with the organization’s budget and strategic plan, then clearly and consistently communicate goals and expectations to your direct report.
- Support your direct report in effectively managing their workloads by planning and prioritizing work activities, and work with them to develop the structures and tools they need to achieve their goals.
Relationship Management
- Cultivate positive relationships with grantors and funding agencies, serving as a point of contact for grant-related matters.
- Collaborate with fundraising and program teams on grant performance, identification of new funding opportunities and stewardship of existing relationships.
Audit Support
- Assists with operational, grantor and financial audits, the preparation of audit schedules, the organization’s financial statements, and the Schedule of Expenditures of Federal Awards.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
- CPA, MA/MBA preferred
- Five or more years of increasingly responsible financial and analytical experience, preferably in a nonprofit organization, with emphasis on grants management
- Strong technology skills are crucial, including Excel, understanding of complex ERP systems, and related system integrations
- Strong knowledge of and experience in the application and interpretation of U.S. GAAP principles, concepts, and theories, with emphasis on grant accounting principles, regulations and compliance requirements.
