The Mission of the San Francisco Department of Public Health (SFDPH) is to protect and promote the health of all San Franciscans. SFDPH strives to achieve its mission through the work of multiple divisions - the San Francisco Health Network, Population Health, Behavioral Health Services, and Administration. The San Francisco Health Network is the City’s only complete system of care and has locations throughout the City, including Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center, Laguna Honda Hospital and Rehabilitation Center, and over 15 primary care health centers. The Population Health Division (PHD) provides core public health services for the City and County of San Francisco: health protection, health promotion, disease and injury prevention, and disaster preparedness and response. Behavioral Health Services operates in conjunction with SFHN and provides a range of mental health and substance use treatment services.

As a Trainee, you will be trained on the day-to-day work and responsibilities of an Account Clerk (1630), while receiving additional support.

1. Train on routine bookkeeping and financial record-keeping operations within complex accounting systems to ensure accurate balances and available budgeted funds.
2. Learn how to post, adjust, and balance entries to subsidiary ledgers.
3. Respond to inquiries from other units, departments, or the general public.
4. Organize software documents and maintain cost control records.
5. Learn how to use accounting software that includes databases, automated accounting systems, spreadsheets, and word processing.
6. Assist in reporting available budget balances and expenditures by category.
7. Help reconcile and summarize accounts.
8. Aid in correcting mathematical errors while ensuring correct balances on cost records, deposits, expenditures, allocations, taxes, penalties, and other related accounting documents.
9. Prepare various accounting forms and process vendor payments through data entry.

Minimum Qualifications:

• At least 3 months of verifiable clerical, retail or similar experience working with the general public and providing routine information or performing basic retail transactions.

OR

• 15 semester units (or equivalent quarter units) of coursework from an accredited college or university.

Desirable Qualifications:

1. Current enrollment in, or successful completion of, any level of coursework from an accredited college or university in financial accounting, economics, business, or related field.
2. Billing, cashiering, and/or data entry experience.
3. Ability to perform accurate mathematical calculations.
4. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
5. Basic level proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
6. Organized and attention to detail.
7. Ability to perform work independently under directions.
8. Ability and willingness to collaborate with a team.
9. Good customer service skills.
10. Strong work ethic: willingness to learn.
