Responsibilities
**Position Summary:**
Provides comprehensive academic advising to a dynamic and diverse body of undergraduate students in the College Center for Advising Services (CCAS); advises students on academic matters including program planning, goal setting, academic progress, policies and procedures; refers students to faculty and other offices for specialized help. Proactively advises at-risk students and students placed on academic probation in course planning and student success strategies. Provides specialized advising and programming for international students with particular focus on first year initiatives such as pre-arrival programs, orientation and CASC 170: International Student Success Seminar. CCAS strives to encourage and celebrate an inclusive environment that is open, welcoming and supportive of staff of all backgrounds and experiences.
**Specific Responsibilities:**
Under direction of Assistant Dean, International Student Affairs in the College, with latitude for independent judgment:
+ Advises a caseload of assigned students in Arts and Sciences and provides information about program planning, academic resources, special academic opportunities, rules and policies and graduation requirements. Advises special populations of exchange students and international first-generation students. Provides guidance on F-1 and J-1 status maintenance and compliance in collaboration with the International Services Office. (60%)
+ May teach or co-teach a transition course for international students studying in the U.S. for the first time. (10%)
+ Provide specialized advising for student support needs and related initiatives. (5%)
+ Develops and coordinates services for international students and families. Plans and implements cultural, social, and educational activities and events for the international campus community with particular attention on first generation international students. (10%)
+ Reviews and completes required immigration paperwork for F-1 student visa maintenance. (10%)
+ Serves on committees such as the Probation Committee, First-Generation Committee, Basic Needs Hub, Academic Planning, and Transfer Committee. Specific assignment to be based on office needs. (5%)
**Requirements:**
Strong cross-cultural communication skills and cultural sensitivity. Familiarity with F-1 student immigration regulations. Excellent organization, time-management, writing skills and ability to build strong interpersonal relationships with students from diverse backgrounds. This job also requires strong problem-solving skills, a desire to coach and advocate for international students and a passion for assisting students as they formulate their educational and personal goals. Desirable skills include familiarity with Macintosh computer applications and FileMaker Pro. Bachelors’ degree with a minimum of two years related experience in student services is required. Master’s degree and overseas living experience preferred. Flexible work options are available to be discussed.
