Position Summary:

Connecticut State Community College (CT State) offers two-year liberal arts degree programs as well as occupational and technical programs for a population with a wide range of academic and experiential preparation. To provide an instructional environment conducive to successful learning experiences for this wide array of students, the College provides the support and help of the Academic Assistant-Culinary Lab.

The Academic Assistant - Culinary Lab will be responsible for maintaining inventories, manage the budget, purchase of perishable and nonperishable items while researching cost comparisons for all items purchased, ensuring safety and sanitation standards are met, maintain, and purchase culinary lab equipment, and manage student workers.

Example of Job Duties:

Under the direction of the Chair, the Academic Assistant - Culinary Lab Manager accountable for providing assistance to faculty in assigned academic labs or centers through effective performance in these essential functional areas:

• Purchasing
• Facility and Equipment
• Maintain Budget
• Inventory
• Communication and Supervision of Students

In addition to the accountabilities listed above, the incumbent is required to carry out the essential duties of: Attendance and participation at convocation and commencement ceremonies; Service on assigned committees and task forces; Attendance and participation at committee, staff, informational and professional meetings.  These may involve attendance at evening or weekend events.

Incumbents must possess proven ability to effectively work with a culturally, linguistically, and ethnically diverse faculty, staff, and student. They are expected to have excellent oral and written communication skills along with strong Information technology literacy skills such as Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams etc.).

Minimum Qualifications:

Associate’s degree in culinary arts or foodservice management or closely related field and up to 2 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of experience and training which would lead to the competencies required to carry out the position’s essential duties.

Incumbents are required to have demonstrated advanced knowledge and abilities in the following: 

• Familiarity of culinary lab equipment operation and set up and safety procedures.
• Understand the proper use of sanitation supplies while enforcing the updated health code and SDS regulations.
• Supervisory and communication skills.
• Knowledge of software such as MS Office applications.
• Extensive knowledge of food, food procurement, and food service operations.

Special Requirements:

• Maintain updated ServSafe certification.
• Current driver’s license.
• Ability to work flexible hours and adapt to changing demands

Preferred Qualifications:

• 5 years' experience in a culinary or food service operations (i.e. chef , storeroom manager, steward).
• Experience in storeroom operations.
• Familiar with inventory management system and procedures.

Starting Salary:

Anticipated Salary; $39,108 approximate annual plus excellent State of CT medical insurance, retirement, and related fringe benefits.

Selection Procedure:
