In support of this mission, the GWSB Undergraduate Programs office is searching for an Academic Advisor. This individual is a key contributor to developing forward thinking and inclusive business leaders, a core aspiration of the Undergraduate Programs office.
This entry level position provides integral academic support and direction for students navigating their academic journey. This position serves as an information hub for students and provides internal and external resources and opportunities for students. This position assists students with navigating transitions, exploring options, overcoming challenges, and developing academic plans by individual appointments and group sessions. This role masters knowledge and understanding of GW rules, regulations, policies, procedures, and academic curriculum, tracks and manages student records, develops, maintains, and enhances internal projects that further student success, and enhances programming for specific student populations in order to ensure student success and support students’ individual/specific needs. This position supports events such as orientation and graduation, maintains student records from matriculation to graduation, and monitors and responds to student inquiries for transfer credit, leave of absence, and registration.
Reporting to the Assistant Director (Curriculum) for Undergraduate Academic Advising, this role does not include direct reports.
The key responsibilities are:
- Provides guidance to students on their course of study from orientation through graduation.
- Educates students on University policies and procedures, goal setting, academic planning, and course selection providing referrals to other resources on campus, as appropriate.
- Serves on committees and/or fulfill programming responsibilities such as New Student Orientation, GWSB Commencement Activities, Admissions Panels, or other committees or assignments as requested by the Vice Dean.
Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.
Minimum Qualifications:
Qualified candidates will hold a Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate area of specialization. Degree must be conferred by the start date of the position. Degree requirements may be substituted with an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.
Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications:
Preferred Qualifications:
- Two (2) years of experience in an academic setting to include at least one year of experience disseminating academic information and reviewing/evaluating student records preferred.
- Sound counseling techniques with sensitivity and discretion to effectively advise students of various social, cultural, economic, and educational backgrounds in the resolution of problems.
- Demonstrated ability in making quality decisions and judgments in analyzing and evaluating student data and academic records.
- Ability to interpret, recommend and implement academic policies, procedures, and regulations as related to academic advising.
- Strong interpersonal and public presentation skills.
- Strong organizational skills.
- Ability to multi-task with demanding time-frames, and pay attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality.
- Experience working independently under general direction in a high volume, fast paced, team-oriented environment, exercising good judgment, creativity and initiative in performance of job responsibilities in higher education.
- Strong knowledge of MS Office, and other software is preferred.
- Skill, knowledge, and experience in effective academic advising techniques. Ability to evaluate students’ needs, and facilitate student decision making.
Hiring Range
$43,888.00 - $67,654.90GW Staff Approach to Pay
