DESCRIPTION
Responsible for providing daily care, feeding, and enrichment activities for a variety of species, while also ensuring the cleanliness and safety of animal enclosures. With a passion for wildlife conservation and animal welfare, Zoo Keepers contribute to the zoo's mission of education and public engagement by sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm with visitors. Through their dedication and expertise, Zoo Keepers help create a stimulating and enriching environment that fosters the health, happiness, and natural behaviors of the zoo's diverse animal collection.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor's degree in Zoology, Biology, Animal Sciences, or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- One year of experience in animal care at an AZA or equivalent facility, gained through employment, internships, or volunteer experience is preferred.
- Passion for wildlife conservation and animal welfare.
- Valid Texas Driver's License
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of animal behavior, nutrition, and health.
- Ability to provide exceptional customer service to internal and external customers.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to lift and carry heavy objects (minimum of 25-75 pounds), work outdoors in various weather conditions, and stand for extended periods.
- Must be available to work weekends, holidays, and occasional evenings as needed.
MAJOR DUTIES
- Provide daily care for animals including feeding, cleaning, and monitoring health.
- Maintain and clean animal enclosures, ensuring they meet safety and hygiene standards.
- Create and implement enrichment programs to stimulate natural behaviors.
- Collaborate with veterinarians for health assessments and treatments.
- Participate in animal behavioral observations and record-keeping.
- Educate visitors about the animals, conservation efforts, and wildlife welfare.
- Ensure the Zoo complies with all federal, state, and other applicable laws, statutes, and regulations governing the collection, exhibition, and care of wild and/or exotic animals (USDA, TPWD, AZA, etc.).
- Responds to emergency calls after normal operating hours.
- Other duties as assigned.
