Idaho Power — located in vibrant Boise, Idaho — is looking for a Utility Laborer to join our Construction crew. It’s an exciting time to work for Idaho Power. What does a Utility Laborer do for us?
They perform construction, maintenance, or other manual work on de-energized distribution, underground projects, or at Idaho Power facilities.

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE
Knowledge of:
- Construction methods, materials, standards, and equipment
- The purpose of commonly encountered materials, parts, and equipment used in line construction or other utility projects
Preferred:
- How to safely load/unload, drive, and operate dump trucks, hauling equipment such as mini-excavator, backhoes, and skid steers
Skills in:
- Basic use of personal computers
- Interpersonal communications
Ability to:
- Perform basic arithmetic calculations
- Maintain effective working relationships with other members of a work team
- Maintain neat, accurate, and legible records
- Respond to emergencies in excess of normal working hours
- Work overtime at the discretion of the supervisor
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Education:
- High school diploma or GED
Experience:
- 1 year of general work experience that includes physical labor and utility experience
OR
- An equivalent combination of appropriate training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
Preferred:
- 3 years of general work experience that includes physical labor and utility experience
OR
- An equivalent combination of appropriate training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities
Licenses & Certifications:
- Valid Department of Transportation (DOT) Medical Card or ability to obtain prior to hire
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position
- Valid CDL or ability to obtain within 120 days
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
This position involves maintenance and repair of transformers at ground level and vault. This can require up to 150 lbs. push/pull activities, lifts up to 50 lbs., frequent kneeling, standing and crouching and may require climbing into the vault occasionally. Mechanical and hand tools are used to dig holes and trenches. Other activities required are loading and unloading backhoes, mini excavators, and skid steers. This position may require hiking/carrying tools up to several miles per day, frequent digging and above shoulder work include running hand lines to assist line crews. Data entry is also required to input all field work into record keeping software when performing role on a construction crew. Job placement is contingent upon successful completion of pre-employment physical evaluation such as a DOT medical certificate exam. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
May be required to complete a field skills assessment at time of interview. Additional safety related training may be required. Projects may include as much as a six-month assignment away from base location. Complete other required Company and safety training. Must abide by Idaho Power Company's safety rules and regulations.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Successful candidate may be required to work non-traditional hours, including daytime or evenings, weekdays, and/or weekends. Travel occasionally with overnight stays and work hitches away from headquarters.
Temporary employees are eligible to apply for internal job postings. Internal, regular employees who are successful candidates will be placed as regular employees in a Temporary Duty Assignment job classification. In order for your current position to be held for your return, qualified employees must have supervisory approval to participate and have been in their current position for at least six months.
