Telematics Engineering Lead - Zipcar

What you’ll do:
Zipcar is looking for a firmware engineering lead to join our telematics team. This person will be working on the firmware that operates our in-vehicle telematics unit, including cellular network communications, Bluetooth and CAN bus communications to the car.

- Work with the team to set quarterly departmental goals and metrics for the team.
- Experience with vehicle OBD and CAN stack
- Identify and evaluate potential partners for telematics solutions and opportunities that mitigate risk and align with the business
- Able to be the technical point of contact for multiple onshore manufacturing partners
- Experience with getting FCC, PTCRB and UK/EU RF regulatory certification for connected devices
- Ability to architect hardware, firmware and backend technologies to solve business problems
- Experience with proposing, designing and developing end-to-end connected devices involving RF, Embedded and connected products
- Provide full lifecycle software development, including requirements gathering, design, development, testing, production deployment, documentation
- Experience with technologies such as RFID, Wireless 3G/4G, Bluetooth
- Able to creatively solve business problems using pre-existing technologies
- Able to solve both short term and long-term business problems
- Technical experience with automotive grade devices to ensure safety of our products
- Able to work with technicians on custom cables and manufacturing of cables and harnesses
- Ability to manage test engineering for connected devices
- Ability to get buy-in on solutions from various stakeholders within Zipcar
- Able to translate business requirements into technical requirements and vice versa
- Stay up-to-date with industry trends and best practices for connected fleet management
- Provide support for existing in-production devices
What drives success for a Telematics Engineering Lead:
- 5+ years experience developing low-level firmware including device drivers or board support packages.
- Proficient in C/C++ programming.
- Able to read hardware schematics and use test equipment (oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, communications protocol analyzers) to help debug firmware problems.
- Prior experience with ARM Cortex-M processors or other microcontrollers.
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or equivalent experience.
- Solid track record of working closely with device manufacturing to deliver on schedule and budget
- Some experience leading mechanical designs is preferable but not necessary
