1.0 INTRODUCTION:
The purpose of this standard procedure is to establish and define the job tasks and reporting relationships of a Technician Assistant at Wateree Animal Hospital.
2.0 REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:
A technician assistant reports directly to and is accountable to the veterinary technicians and doctors.
No other personnel report to this function at this time.
3.0 JOB TASKS:
The job tasks of a Technician Assistant shall consist of, but not be limited to, the following:
3.1 Reports to work on time and as scheduled on a dependable and consistent basis to prepare for the schedule for that day, as well as to be available to assist with any needs within the hospital.
3.2 Prepares for office hours by stocking drawers and supplies in exam rooms, treatment or surgery. Draw up vaccines and set up syringes as necessary, and assure that drugs and equipment are ready for use.
3.3 Completes all assigned job tasks in an accurate and timely manner. Knows the hospital's standard operating procedure for each task.
3.4 Assists veterinary personnel in providing care, management, treatment, and sanitary conditions for animals.
3.5 Records items accurately in the "Want List" within Avimark and pulls items out of inventory with opening items for in-house use. i.e.; syringes, needles, pill pockets, treats, etc.
3.6 Strives to become thoroughly familiar with the equipment used to practice medicine in daily work and can use them in an efficient and accurate manner.
3.7 Assists with animals by positioning or restraining them for examination and treatment.
3.8 Properly cleans, packs, and autoclaves all surgical materials after they are used, as assigned. Keeps the operating room properly stocked and prepared for surgery.
3.9 Maintains work areas in as clean a manner as possible and free of debris. Cleans the work site thoroughly at the conclusion of each job.
3.10 Is safety conscious at all times. Follows all safety policies, procedures, rules and regulations and demonstrates safe practices when performing work assignments.
3.11 Obtains technician, doctor, or management's instruction when unsure of how to perform a work step. Always asks questions and never assumes.
3.12 Develops a full understanding of work to be done prior to beginning any new job. Seeks assistance from the technician, doctor, or management as required in order not to make an irreversible mistake.
3.13 Communicates with the technicians as to an animals' change in status and/or symptoms it is experiencing and documents such in the patient's record and on the patients flow sheet.
3.14 Is familiar with company rules, regulations, policies and procedures and complies fully with all of them.
3.15 Works closely with the technicians to get the job done. Assists kennel personnel in keeping patients clean and dry at all times. This is a task that must be closely monitored.
3.16 Able to assist with radiographs following all safety requirements.
3.17 Attends meetings (mandatory) as required and participates willingly in the proceedings; offering opinion and fact.
3.18 Does not engage in idle gossip with other workers during working hours. Gossip is not tolerated.
3.19 Ascertains animal's general condition by measuring and recording animal's vital statistics, i.e., weight, temperature, pulse, and respiratory rate. Knows normal values and notes any abnormalities and makes a technician aware.
3.20 Performs general physical observations of animals to detect obvious abnormalities or conditions and reports the findings to a technician. i.e. cuts, fleas, ticks, eye discharge, etc.
3.21 Collects, preserves, identifies, and prepares blood, urine, feces, skin scrapings, postmortem tissue specimens, etc. for shipment and/or laboratory testing.
3.22 Assists technicians to prepares animals for surgery as directed and functions as a scrub assistant during aseptic surgical procedures.
3.23 Administers oral, topical, and parental medications, treatments, and immunizations as directed by the Doctor or technician.
3.24 Assists with the discharge of patients by preparing the animal to go under. BE CAREFUL TO ENSURE THAT THE ANIMAL BEING DISCHARGED IS WELL-GROOMED, CLEAN, AND EXHIBITS NO SIGN OF UNIDENTIFIED MEDICAL PROBLEMS.
3.25 Assists the receptionist when necessary, to ensure that the job gets done efficiently.
3.26 Communicates with the appropriate personnel when a medical supply is running low (Needs List) or piece of equipment is not operating correctly (Complete a Repair Sheet and present to Operations Manager).
3.27 Performs other job tasks as assigned by the technicians in an accurate and timely manner.
3.28 Also includes all tasks as identified on the Exam Room Technician, Treatment Room Technician, or Surgery Technician Task Lists.
3.29 Continually works on skills to become 100 percent proficient of skills listed on the Technician Skills Checklist.
4.0 JOB REQUIREMENTS:

High School Education
EXPERIENCE:
Experience with animals preferred
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Must have the knowledge, skill, and ability to successfully and accurately conduct the types of general clinical duties that is required of a Technician Assistant in this company. Skills should advance with time and experience.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be in good general health.
Must have a full range of bodily motion as much, walking, standing, lifting, reaching, carrying, bending, handling, fingering, grasping, squatting, working on the back, climbing inclines and declines, stooping, and prolonged standing are daily requirements of the job.
Should be able to lift weights in excess of 40 pounds above the waist.
Must have good vision and cannot be color blind.
Must be able to hear and speak well.
COMMUNICATION REQUIREMENTS AND SKILLS:
Must be able to read, write, and speak well in the English language.
Must be skilled in the development and maintenance of efficient interpersonal relationships and must be able to receive instructions from superiors and peers.
INTELLECTUAL REQUIREMENTS AND SKILLS:
Must have good long and short term memory.
Must be detail oriented and dedicated to efficient and timely follow-up of assignments and instructions and not prone to making mistakes.
Must be a fast learner who can adapt to change rapidly.
Must be able to make accurate decisions in a timely manner.
Must be able to understand abstract and complex activities and actions and be able to relate these to others in an understandable manner.
WORK REQUIREMENTS:
Must be able to follow instructions without variation.

Must be capable of working and communicating with fellow workers on a daily basis.
Must be able to work under stressful conditions usually brought about by having to meet deadlines or emergency situations that arise.

Must be capable of performing accurate routine, repetitive duties.
ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
The work requires direct interaction with animals; some animals may not be as docile as others so extreme caution is required. The facility is climate controlled and well lighted.
