Here's what you will be doing in the role:
The Tax Controversy Specialist is responsible for representing and assisting clients in resolving complex tax disputes with federal, state, and local tax authorities. This position requires a deep understanding of tax law, regulatory requirements, and tax procedure, as well as strong analytical and negotiation skills to guide clients through audits, appeals, and other tax controversy matters. You will work closely with clients, legal representatives, and tax authorities to achieve favorable outcomes.
Responsibilities:
- Represent clients in tax audits, administrative appeals, and other interactions with the IRS and state/local tax authorities.
- Prepare and file tax protest letters, responses to information requests, and other submissions as required during disputes.
- Conduct in-depth research of federal, state, and local tax laws and provide strategic advice on tax controversy matters.
- Assist in the preparation of cases for IRS Appeals and Tax Court, including drafting briefs and other court submissions.
- Collaborate with the firm’s tax team to develop and implement strategies for resolving tax disputes.
- Provide guidance on tax compliance issues to minimize future tax risk and avoid controversy.
- Manage multiple tax controversy cases simultaneously, ensuring deadlines are met and clients are kept informed throughout the process.
- Maintain relationships with key stakeholders, including IRS representatives, state tax officials, and legal professionals.
- Stay current on tax law changes, rulings, and IRS audit initiatives that could affect clients’ tax positions.
- Manage case files in a productive, efficient, and organized manner
- Ability to investigate and diagnose client's individual and/or business tax issues
- Mentor and train team members.
- Perform other duties as needed and assigned
What you bring to the role:
- Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation or Enrolled Agent (EA) designation required
- 2+ years recent public accounting experience required
- Prior Tax Controversy experience required
- Income tax compliance experience
- Experience with IRS, FTB, State and Local Tax and other tax authorities in Audits, Notices, Research, etc.
- Strong analytical skills to conduct tax-related research
- Knowledge of federal and state tax issues
- Knowledge of computer systems, programs, and data retrieval
- Ability to work under pressure in a fast pace environment
- Ability to meet timely deadlines
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and the ability to adapt to new software applications.
Software:
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite Word, Excel, and Outlook is a plus

Compensation Information: Individual salaries that are offered to a candidate are determined after consideration of numerous factors including but not limited to the candidate’s qualifications, experience, skills, and geography.
