About the Job
The IT Systems Administrator will focus on technical work providing leadership in the installation, upgrade and maintenance of applications, middleware, and servers which includes the installation of new software releases and system upgrades, evaluating and installing patches and conducting database migrations, refreshes, and restores. Position may function as team leader of focused work groups on a regular basis. Incumbents enjoy considerable latitude, within guidelines and system limits, to propose practical approaches to troubleshoot and solve technical problems. Duties are performed under the supervision of an administrative or technical supervisor.
The ideal candidate will bring considerable knowledge of appropriate computer programming languages and techniques; considerable knowledge of operation, characteristics, and capabilities of computer hardware, teleprocessing equipment, and forms handling equipment; strong analytical skills, particularly as involves unit function, sequence of operations, and necessary outcomes. Experience in converting user specifications into a successful data processing application is essential. This individual should have strong communication skills and an ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
This is a full-time, limited-service position based in Montpelier, Vermont, but is a hybrid role with both in-office and remote work. The limited-service term will end 6/30/2028. Starting salary is $31.76 per hour. The Systems Administrator is a non-exempt Judicial Branch position equivalent to pay grade 26. Minimum Requirements:
Bachelor's degree in computer science AND two (2) years or more of experience providing support to staff in the operation, maintenance, and installation of computer systems.
OR
Associate's degree in computer science or college level coursework that includes 15 computer science credits AND four (4) years or more of experience providing support to staff in the operation, maintenance, and installation of computer systems.
OR
Six (6) years or more of experience providing support to staff in the operation, maintenance, and installation of computer systems.
Additional Skill Set Desired:
- Awareness of budgetary and planning techniques and procedures.
- Ability to evaluate system performance.
- Ability to evaluate and estimate system development costs.
- Ability to work under pressure from deadlines.
Summary of Duties:
- Helping to implement and maintain the architecture necessary for department systems integration with other applications.
- Troubleshooting technical problems including applications, databases, and servers.
- Planning and implementing procedures for backup and recovery processes.
- Determining the future growth requirements of applications and working with other IT professionals to address applications capacity needs.
- Ensuring the performance and reliability of systems by monitoring for availability, load balancing, and satisfactory response time as well as tuning databases.
- Monitoring third party tools for applications and system performance and providing recommendations for enhancements/changes to vendors.
- Producing useful, readable, and complete documentation including process and procedure manuals, implementation guides, and other technical documents.
- Staying up to date with technology trends and best practices.
- This position is responsible for all duties defined and other duties as assigned such as training other employees.
- The job entails the operation of various types of electronic equipment and new equipment may be introduced at any time.
Scheduled hours of work generally conform to public court hours, but assignments may extend beyond those hours. Occasional travel to other courts within the State of Vermont may be required. Travel will be reimbursed according to State policies. This position will be eligible for longevity increases in accordance with the State step pay plan and annual cost of living increases as enacted by the Vermont State Legislature. Job Code # 24105
