The Systems Administrator I will be a technical leader for the IT Classroom & Device Solutions team. They will seek to support and invest into the back-end and shared services that are used by IT Classroom & Device Solutions to deliver products to Faculty, Staff, and Students throughout the University. This position will be part of cross-functional teams bringing automation to systems supporting operations. It will also directly interface with the IT Platform Engineering team to help deliver excellent service and support, including participating in a Systems Administration practice team.The Systems Administrator I will be responsible for performing systems administration for servers, applications, and device management systems, always looking to increase standard and automated methods for scaling operations. With the team, this position designs systems for the reliability and availability of critical enterprise services and responds with timely support. This position requires a self-starter, and problem solver, who has an ever-growing expertise in topics such as large installation server administration, systems design, server operating systems, virtualization, clustered systems, applications administration, scripting and automation, config management, logging and monitoring, disk encryption, print services, device management, app/device store, and web browser management in a highly available mission critical environment.
Required Education
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, a related degree, or demonstrable equivalent experience.
- CompTIA Server+, RHCSA, MCSE, or equivalent desired.
Required Experience
- One to two years of System Administration.
- Experience in the disciplines listed in the summary above, and the skills below in a team-based environment.
Primary Duties/Essential Functions
- Administer Linux and Windows system hosts and clusters in a virtual environment (VMWare).
- Administer Apple/Windows/VM/Raspberry Pi system hosts in the environment (JAMF/SCCM/YoDeck).
- Build, design, and deploy servers (physical, virtual, and cloud), as needed and as part of regular hardware and software refresh cycles.
- Provide support for incident resolution, service requests, and problem management for the classroom and device support team that provides first-level operations support facilitation.
- Contribute to multiple teams.
- Conduct routine server software maintenance, patching, and performance tuning to ensure optimal performance and availability with config management automation where possible.
- Build, configure and maintain application environments (e.g. dev, testing, staging, production).
- Deploy updates to keep applications current and secure.
- Perform benchmarking, tuning, and capacity planning for systems and applications.
- Work on location or remote as needed and agreed upon with your supervisor.
- Assist with direct and indirect monitoring and log analysis, as well as establish thresholds for automated alerts and notifications.
- Assist with deployments of application code, configuration, etc from development through to production.
- Deploy, manage, and troubleshoot common application stacks (e.g. App, Web, Database).
- Assist with managing common security practices for applications and systems (e.g. SELinux, iptables, windows firewall, antivirus).
- Configure and allocate cross-platform SAN/NAS-based storage to virtual and physical infrastructure. And maintain storage replication and snapshots.
- Participate on Directory Services teams for managing attributes and policy for client/server and other personal technology applications.
- Design, document, and implement solutions for providing various types of high-availability systems.
- Research and recommend new technology, services, applications, and procedures.
- Coordinate and communicate scheduled maintenance and deployments affecting services, with internal and external stakeholders, according to change and release management.
- Build and maintain server and platform images, containers, and or other config management tools for rapid deployment of systems.
- Work with infrastructure teams, application teams, and service providers to ensure solid designs and solutions to maintain secure and highly available systems.
- Manage enterprise backups, recovery and Disaster Recovery solutions.
- Understand and adhere to all applicable university policies and processes.
- Perform other duties as requested by the supervisor and Information Technology leadership.
Skills
- Our team-based model requires initiative, good communication skills, the ability to work on multiple efforts concurrently, and the desire to learn multiple disciplines.
- Learn new technologies in support of the disciplines described above, as well as emerging integration patterns and DevOps models for operational efficiency, availability, and performance. (Saltstack, Ansible, Chef, or Puppet experience a plus).
- Ability to manage Linux and Windows, virtualization, and containers in a highly available environment (e.g. RedHat EL/CentOS, Docker, Kubernetes, VmWare, AWS, Rackspace etc.).
- A solid understanding of operating systems in general; understands paging and swapping, inter-process communications, devices and what device drivers do, file system concepts, and can use performance analysis to tune systems.
- Knowledge of basic scripting in various languages: Perl, Bash, PowerShell, Python, etc.
- Ability to manage server hardware and infrastructure hardware in an enterprise-class data center environment.
- Ability to manage a virtual infrastructure for hosting virtualized desktops and virtualized servers.
- Ability to manage various storage technologies including SAN, NAS, Fibre Channel, iSCSI, clustering file systems, and storage operating systems.
- Strong understanding of the following services and their relationships in integration: application, web, email, file, print, directory.
- Strong understanding of Apache, IIS, Tomcat, VMware, SMTP Servers (postfix, sendmail, etc.).
- Storage approaches such as SAN, NAS, Clustered File Systems (e.g. glusterfs), S3 etc.
- Basic installation and maintenance of database platforms: (Oracle, Postgres, MySQL, MSSQL).
- Strong understanding of the following protocols: HTTP, FTP, DNS, LDAP, IMAP, SMTP, SSL, SSH, CIFS, NFS, OAUTH, SAML..
- Knowledge of basic LAN/WAN technologies, protocols and hardware.
- Ability to solve problems quickly and automate processes.
- Team skills for work management and planning for continuous improvement and operations: scrum, kanban, etc.

Compensation
- Grade 12: $30.67 to $35.27 is the hourly compensation for this role and reflects what Azusa Pacific University reasonably expects to pay for this position. Actual compensation may vary based on the qualifications, experience, and internal equity. In addition to compensation, APU offers a competitive benefits package.
