Ashland has an exciting opportunity for a Synthetic Polymer Chemist to join Ashland Specialty Ingredients G. P. as a member of our Applied Research Team in Global R&D. This position will report to a Staff Scientist/Research Scientist.

The responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Setup, operate and maintain laboratory equipment used in the synthesis of new products
- Work with scientists to optimize synthesis experiments to meet new product specifications
- Work closely with process and production engineers to transfer data and knowledge to support scale-up of new products
- Contribute to writing of technical reports and presentations
- Maintain laboratory notebooks and logbooks in accordance with company guidelines
- Comply with company procedural guidelines, laboratory procedures, and safety programs
In order to be qualified for this role, you must possess the following:
- Minimum of three (3) years of industry experience working in a research laboratory or manufacturing plant
- Good written and oral communication skills
- Ability to work in highly collaborative cross-functional environment involving global labs and manufacturing sites
- Strong computer skills with ability to enter and manage data in spreadsheets and reports
- Good track record of safety practices
- Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States
The following skill sets are preferred by the business unit:
- Bachelor's degree in physical or life sciences (i.e. chemistry, physics, materials science, biochemistry, biology)
- Strong working knowledge of synthetic organic chemistry
- Experience in synthesis of water-soluble polymers (e.g. cellulose ethers, guar derivatives, etc.)
- Experience in different types of polymerization techniques (solution, emulsion, & precipitation)
- Experience in the synthesis of polymer ingredients for Pharmaceutical, Personal Care, or Coatings application areas
