Overview:
The Hydrographic Surveyor is responsible for conducting precise measurements and mapping of underwater terrain, supporting marine navigation, infrastructure development, and environmental assessments. This role requires a combination of technical expertise, fieldwork, and data analysis to ensure high-quality survey results for various marine and offshore projects. From the oilfields and telecommunication routes, to the offshore renewable frontier, we have many positions for Surveyors available worldwide.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Conduct hydrographic surveys using multibeam and single-beam echosounders, side-scan sonar, and other geophysical instruments.
- Plan, execute, and oversee fieldwork operations, including equipment setup, calibration, and maintenance.
- Process and analyze survey data to produce accurate charts, maps, and reports.
- Collaborate with project teams to ensure survey objectives are met within budget and timeline constraints.
- Ensure compliance with local and international hydrographic standards and safety protocols.
- Troubleshoot technical issues with survey equipment and software during fieldwork.
- Provide technical guidance and support to team members and stakeholders as needed.
Minimum Requirements:
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Hydrography, Geomatics, Oceanography, Marine Science, or a related field.
Experience/Specific Knowledge:
- At least 3 years of experience in hydrographic survey operations, including data acquisition and processing.
- Proficiency with survey software such as Hypack, EIVA, Starfix, QINSy, or CARIS HIPS and SIPS.
- Familiarity with marine positioning systems, including GPS and inertial navigation systems.
- Knowledge of geospatial data management and coordinate systems.
Certifications, Licenses & Registrations:
- Valid offshore safety certifications such as STCW, OGUK UKOOA, HUET, or BOSIET.
- IHO Category A or B Hydrographic Surveyor Certification (preferred but not required).
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel internationally.
Competencies, Skills & Abilities:
- Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities, especially in challenging field environments.
- Effective communication and collaboration skills with multidisciplinary teams.
- Ability to adapt to dynamic work conditions, including extended periods offshore or in remote areas.
- Proficiency in GIS and mapping tools such as ArcGIS or Global Mapper.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
- Extended periods of standing, walking, or working on vessels in various weather conditions.
- Physical fitness to meet the demands of offshore and fieldwork environments.
Working Conditions:
- Combination of office-based and fieldwork assignments, often in remote or offshore locations.
- Exposure to variable weather conditions and extended working hours during field operations.
- May require frequent travel, both domestic and international.
Supervisory Responsibility:
- May supervise junior surveyors, technicians, or support staff during field operations.
Preferred Education, Experience, Certifications, Competencies, Skills & Abilities:
- Advanced degree in Hydrography, Geomatics, or a related field.
- Experience with unmanned survey platforms such as ASVs or AUVs.
- Additional certifications in geospatial analysis or marine geophysics.
- Demonstrated leadership in managing survey projects and teams.
- Experience with subsea construction or pipeline inspection projects.
- Familiarity with environmental regulations and marine permitting processes.
